Taman Beji Griya Waterfall: Melukat Ritual in the Punggul Ravine

In Punggul village, Abiansemal district of Badung, a green ravine hides a small waterfall that drops right in front of a row of shrines. Taman Beji Griya Waterfall is not just a photo spot — it is a sacred site for melukat, the Balinese self-purification ritual. It sits roughly 40 minutes by road from both Ubud and Canggu, close enough for a half-day trip.

Down Into the Ravine by Staircase

From the car park, the path descends hundreds of railed concrete steps through bamboo clumps and tall trees to the floor of the Tukad Penet valley. Going down is easy; coming back up is what leaves you breathless. Allow 10–15 minutes each way. Wear rubber-soled shoes because the rocks near the water are often slippery, and carry drinking water.

The Melukat Ritual With a Pemangku

Melukat here follows a sequence: cleansing at several spouts, prayers led by a pemangku (temple priest) inside the temple grounds, then standing beneath the main waterfall. The management offers packages that include an English-speaking guide, offerings, a towel and a locker. Remember this is not a tourist attraction: follow the pemangku's instructions and never photograph people while they pray.

Dress Code & Best Timing

  • Sarong and sash are compulsory. Kamen rental is available at the entrance and is usually included in ritual packages.
  • Bring a change of clothes — melukat participants get completely soaked.
  • Menstruating women may not enter the temple area; this customary rule is enforced.
  • Come early, right at opening: light is just reaching the ravine and queues are still short.
  • Bring cash, as on-site payment is generally card-free.
