Seraya Secrets is a shore dive just south of Tulamben, in Kubu district, Karangasem. The bottom is a black volcanic sand slope with an average depth of about 10 m and a maximum of 25 m, according to the Amed Jepun Divers dive-site page. Current is minimal, so Open Water certified divers can join. This is muck diving: you are here for small hidden animals, not big coral. Information checked October 2026.
1. This is not the Tulamben in the brochures
If you picture coral walls or a shipwreck, those are other sites in the same village: the USS Liberty and the Tulamben Drop Off. At Seraya Secrets the view is dark sand that looks empty until your guide points something out. Divers who want colourful coral and big fish are usually bored here.
2. What people come to find
- Harlequin shrimp, ghost pipefish, flamboyant cuttlefish, frogfish, seahorses and many nudibranchs.
- Mimic octopus is mentioned by some operators but never guaranteed.
- At night: octopus, bobtail squid and snake eels. Some reports mention bioluminescent plankton.
One online listing names Lembeh sea dragons and Banggai cardinalfish here. No other source backs that up, so do not count on it.
3. The guide matters more than the site
The site has no clear boundaries and the animals are masters of camouflage. Without a guide who knows where they hide, an hour on the sand can end with almost nothing seen. Ask the operator whether their guides regularly dive Seraya.
4. Entry is from a rocky beach
The Tulamben coast is rocky, so wear booties and go in slowly when the waves are small. The fine sand stirs up easily. Keep your body and fins off the bottom, or visibility drops for everyone behind you.
5. When to go
The water is about 27-30°C all year. In the dry season, April to October, the sea is generally calmer and visibility better. From Amed it is under an hour along the coast road, from south Bali about 3 hours, so it makes more sense to stay a night in Tulamben or Amed.
6. Location and booking
- View on Google Maps
- Book through a dive centre in Tulamben or Amed. Prices per dive vary between operators, so compare and ask whether gear rental and the guide are included.

Bring a small torch even on a day dive. On black sand, the colours of tiny animals only show properly under a close light.
