Pura Pulaki & Pura Melanting, Pemuteran: Cliffside Sea Temple and Monkey Guardians in West Bali

On the Singaraja–Gilimanuk road near Pemuteran, Pura Pulaki rises grandly against a rocky cliff facing the West Bali sea. This sacred temple is famous for the hundreds of grey macaques regarded as guardians of the site, and for stunning sea views, especially at sunset. History & Legend

Pura Pulaki is linked to the journey of Dang Hyang Nirartha, the 16th-century Hindu priest who spread his teachings across Bali. Local legend says the area was once a settlement whose people reached spiritual perfection and became unseen (gamang). Today the temple is one of the important shrines on Bali’s west coast and is busy on holy days.

Monkey Guardians & Temple Etiquette

Hundreds of grey macaques live freely around the temple. They are tame but mischievous, so keep your belongings safe:

• Store glasses, hats, phones, and food in a closed bag.
• Avoid displaying plastic or food in your hand.
• A sarong and sash are required, usually available at the entrance; dress and behave respectfully.
• Menstruating women are advised not to enter the main area.

A short distance from Pura Pulaki, Pura Melanting sits in a lush valley and is known as a place to pray for fortune and smooth trade. Merchants from many regions come to worship here.
