Keramas Beach in Gianyar, about 30–45 minutes east of Sanur, is a black volcanic-sand beach that's legendary among surfers. Its waves form a fast, powerful right-hand reef break good enough to host international pro surf competitions. The atmosphere is far calmer than the crowded south, with rice fields and open sky behind the shore.

Visiting Tips
The best time to surf is the dry season (around April–October) in the morning when the wind is still offshore. Because the bottom is reef, beginners should watch or take a lesson with a local instructor. Bring footwear as the black sand can get hot midday, and come early to enjoy the quiet sunrise.
