There is no entry ticket for Gumicik Beach in Ketewel village, Sukawati. You only pay parking, about Rp2,000 for a scooter and Rp5,000 for a car according to IDN Times, and the beach is open 24 hours. It is roughly 30 minutes from central Denpasar and about an hour from the airport.
What you actually see
Wide, fine black sand, a straight east-facing shoreline and a row of jukung fishing boats. In 2021 the Bali-Penida river basin authority built a roughly 500-metre anti-erosion seawall here. NusaBali reported that it links the coastal defences coming from Padang Galak and also gave fishermen somewhere to moor, which they never had before. So mornings are the liveliest time: boats come in, locals walk the seafront path and the sun rises straight ahead.
Locals also believe that burying your feet in the black sand eases aches and rheumatism. Treat that as local tradition, not medical advice.
Swimming: better not
Waves at Gumicik are big and the currents are strong. Bali Post reported an elderly man drowning after being dragged by the current in April 2025, and an 11-year-old boy was swept away and died in February 2026. There is no permanent lifeguard post like in Sanur. With children, stay on the sand well back from the break.
Surfers know the Ketewel reef as a shallow, sharp right-hander that only works at high tide and only for experienced riders. Beginners should go elsewhere.
The downsides
- River-borne rubbish washes up after heavy rain. On 4 February 2026 Sukawati police and villagers cleaned the beach after President Prabowo criticised dirty beaches in Bali, and another clean-up followed in March 2026. In the wet season (roughly November to March) it can look messy.
- Facilities are basic: there are food and drink sellers, but don't count on decent rinse showers.
- Midday is hot with little shade.
