Cucukan Beach, in Banjar Cucukan, Medahan village, Blahbatuh, is free and open 24 hours, about 25-35 minutes from Sanur via Jl. Prof. IB Mantra and 35-45 minutes from Ubud. This black-sand beach is quiet on weekdays, but its 2025-2026 safety record is worth reading first.
1. This is not a swimming beach
Three incidents in four months. On 7 December 2025 four teenagers who were fishing were swept out when one tried to free a hook snagged on the rocks; all survived thanks to eight Balawista lifeguards from Gianyar's disaster agency (BPBD) who were on duty (NusaBali). On 5 April 2026 at 9.18 pm a 28-year-old man was dragged out while swimming on the night of Banyu Pinaruh and was rescued by volunteers (Bali Post). Follow the flags and the guards; each flag is explained in our Bali beach safety guide.
2. Choose surf lessons carefully
In February 2026 a German tourist surfing here was carried about 600 metres until he hit the breakwater, ending up with abrasions and a cracked tooth. A Balawista officer told Bali Post that many outside surf guides have no certification, and that Cucukan is not suitable for surfing. Ask for a certificate before you pay.
3. Stay off the breakwater rocks
The rocks and breakwater are slippery and pounded by waves. The December 2025 incident started with a fishing hook stuck there.
4. On Banyu Pinaruh the beach fills with locals
The day after Saraswati, Balinese come to the beach for ritual cleansing. On the 210-day cycle, the next Banyu Pinaruh falls on Sunday 1 November 2026 (an estimate; check a Balinese calendar). Expect crowds from before dawn and packed parking, and give worshippers space.
5. Facilities are simple
There are toilets, seafood warungs, shaded pavilions and a jogging path along the shore (IDN Times). No official parking rate appears in the sources checked (October 2026); carry small notes, around Rp2,000-5,000.
6. Come in the morning
Mornings are cooler and quieter, before the black sand heats up. In the late afternoon locals arrive to fish and hang out.

Pura Masceti, one of the major temples on the Gianyar coast, is in the same village. If you visit, wear a sarong and sash.
