Tabanan Travel Guide 2026: Jatiluwih, Tanah Lot, Batukaru & How to Save With Hotel Vouchers

Tabanan is the side of Bali that has barely changed. The regency stretches from dark-sand beaches in the south to the cool slopes of Mount Batukaru in the north, and it is still made of terraced rice fields, quiet village roads and old temples that tour buses rarely reach. If you are tired of Canggu traffic and Seminyak prices, two days in Tabanan can change how you see Bali.

Why Tabanan Instead of South Bali

Tabanan is Bali's rice bowl. Its subak irrigation system is UNESCO-recognised, and the scenery is not a tourism set piece — it is farmland genuinely worked every day. The result is simple: cleaner air, quieter nights, and rooms and meals that can cost 30–50% less than in the touristy south.

  • Reasonable distances: Tanah Lot is only about 45–60 minutes from Canggu; Jatiluwih is roughly 2 hours from Kuta.
  • Cool highlands: the Jatiluwih–Batukaru area sits at 700–1,000 m, with nights around 18–21°C.
  • Crowds in only two spots: Tanah Lot at sunset and Jatiluwih at midday. Everything else is almost empty.

The Places You Should Not Skip

  • Jatiluwih Rice Terrace — UNESCO-listed subak rice fields with marked trekking loops of 1–5 km. Open roughly 07:00–18:00; tickets around Rp40,000–75,000 per person plus parking. View on Google Maps
  • Tanah Lot Temple — the sea-rock temple that defines Bali on postcards. Open roughly 06:00–19:00; tickets around Rp45,000–75,000 for adults. Arrive by 17:00 to get parking and a photo spot before sunset. View on Google Maps
  • Pura Luhur Batukaru — a forest temple on the mountain slope: cold, misty and genuinely solemn. Voluntary donation plus sarong rental, around Rp20,000–40,000. Bring a warm layer. View on Google Maps
  • Leke Leke Waterfall — a slender fall in a green ravine, reached by a 10–15 minute walk over bamboo bridges. Tickets around Rp50,000–80,000, usually including a trail guide. View on Google Maps
  • Bali Butterfly Park (Wanasari) — a netted butterfly dome, easy and good with children. Open roughly 08:00–17:00; tickets around Rp50,000–100,000. View on Google Maps
  • Angseri Hot Springs — natural thermal pools at the bottom of a valley, with public pools and private rooms. Around Rp20,000–50,000 depending on your choice. View on Google Maps
  • Balian Beach — a dark-sand surf beach with consistent waves, a favourite of intermediate surfers. Free entry, parking around Rp5,000–10,000. View on Google Maps
  • Soka Beach — a wide, empty beach on the Denpasar–Gilimanuk road, a sunset stop without the crowd. Effectively free. View on Google Maps
  • Belimbing Village, Pupuan — terraced rice panoramas plus coffee and clove plantations, free and almost tourist-free. View on Google Maps

A Realistic Two-Day Route

Day 1 (coast & icon): leave Canggu or Seminyak early, stop at Bali Butterfly Park, have lunch at a warung near Tabanan town, then head to Soka Beach or Balian Beach in the afternoon. Close the day at Tanah Lot for sunset — enter around 17:00 so you are not fighting for parking.

Day 2 (highlands): climb to Jatiluwih early while the mist is still up and the trails are cool, continue to Pura Luhur Batukaru, stop at Leke Leke Waterfall, and finish by soaking at Angseri Hot Springs before descending. With extra time, add Belimbing village in Pupuan.

Estimated Tickets & Transport Costs

  • Car with driver: around Rp600,000–900,000 per day (about 10 hours), excluding fuel and the driver's meal. This is the safest option because the roads to Batukaru are narrow and winding.
  • Scooter rental: around Rp70,000–120,000 per day. Cheap, but avoid the mountain roads during afternoon rain.
  • Total entry fees for two days: roughly Rp200,000–350,000 per person for everything listed above.
  • Food: local warungs around Rp25,000–60,000 per dish; rice-field-view cafes can run Rp80,000–150,000.

Where to Stay: Tanah Lot, Jatiluwih or Soka/Balian

  • Tanah Lot & Kediri area: the widest choice of resorts, next to a clifftop golf course and only about an hour from the airport. Ideal if you want resort comfort without Seminyak density.
  • Jatiluwih, Senganan & Penebel: villas and homestays facing the rice fields — cool, very quiet and far friendlier on price. Dinner options are limited, so confirm your property serves evening meals.
  • Soka & Balian: relaxed beach stays and surf camps, perfect for a slow drive on towards West Bali or Pemuteran.

Tabanan is a region where your accommodation budget genuinely shapes the trip: one night in a seaside resort near Tanah Lot plus one night in a Jatiluwih rice-field villa gives you two completely different versions of Bali. Before you book, compare prices and grab an AccessiaPass hotel voucher — our stay vouchers cut the room cost so the rest of your budget can go to a full-day driver, entry tickets and dinner over the rice fields. Pick your dates, lock in the voucher now, and let quiet Tabanan be the base of your Bali trip this year.
