Kintamani in Bangli Regency is a highland of cool air, volcanic caldera views, and the iconic Mount Batur and Lake Batur. It is famous as Bali's best sunrise trekking spot and a place to relax in natural hot springs. This guide covers everything you need to know before visiting, including price ranges and how to save on your stay.
Mount Batur Sunrise Trekking
Climbing Mount Batur (about 1,717 m) is Kintamani's signature activity. Trekkers usually set off at around 3:00–4:00 a.m. from Toya Bungkah village, hiking roughly 1.5–2 hours to catch the sunrise at the summit.
- Use a licensed local guide; trekking packages cost around Rp350–600k per person, often including breakfast and pickup.
- Bring a warm jacket, comfortable shoes, and a flashlight; summit temperatures can drop below 15°C.
- No-hike alternative: enjoy the sunrise from a roadside viewpoint at the caldera rim.
Pinggan & Pelaga: A Land Above the Clouds
For the sea of clouds without hiking, visit Pinggan village and the Pelaga area. Arrive before dawn and watch clouds blanket the valley with Mount Batur as a backdrop. Viewpoint entry is usually around Rp10–25k per person.
Lake Batur & Hot Springs
Lake Batur is the largest crater lake in Bali. Along its shores you'll find natural hot springs such as Toya Devasya and Batur Natural Hot Spring, ideal for soaking after a trek.
- Hot spring entry is around Rp150–350k per person depending on the package and pool facilities.
- Many offer lake-facing pools, restaurants, and lounging areas.
- You can also rent a boat to explore the lake or visit Trunyan village.
Caldera Views, Temples & Coffee Plantations
Along Penelokan and Kintamani there are many restaurants with dramatic caldera panoramas — perfect for lunch overlooking the mountain and lake. Don't miss Pura Ulun Danu Batur, an important temple dedicated to the lake goddess Dewi Danu. The route to Kintamani also passes many coffee plantations offering free tasting tours, including kopi luwak (around Rp50–100k per cup).
Best Time, Weather & Transport
- Best time: the dry season (April–October) for clear skies and crisp sunrises.
- Weather: cool to cold, especially before dawn; afternoons can be misty.
- From Ubud: roughly 1.5–2 hours by car; a car with driver costs about Rp600–900k per day, or use Grab/Gojek for one-way trips.
Since many activities start before dawn, staying in Ubud or near Kintamani makes the trip far more comfortable. Compare and buy a hotel staycation voucher on AccessiaPass so you can rest well before chasing the sunrise while saving on accommodation.
