Gedong Arca Museum, Bedulu: Bali's Prehistoric Sarcophagi Almost Nobody Visits

Five minutes from the crowds at Goa Gajah sits a wide courtyard full of stone sarcophagi that is almost always empty. The Gedong Arca Archaeological Museum in Bedulu village, Blahbatuh, is the official state archaeology museum for the Bali, West Nusa Tenggara and East Nusa Tenggara region. It holds around 3,000 heritage objects, yet daily visitors can often be counted on one hand.

What You Will See

  • Prehistoric stone sarcophagi — dozens of stone burial caskets, some shaped like turtles with carved guardian faces.
  • Bronze collection — nekara drums and metal tools from the transition between the Stone and Bronze Ages.
  • Statues and stone fragments from roughly the 8th to the 15th century, plus Chinese ceramics from ancient trade routes.

Why It Stays Quiet

The museum is not on standard tour itineraries and barely promotes itself. That is exactly the appeal: you can read the labels and take photos without a crowd, and staff will usually walk you through the chronology if you ask.

Pair It with the Sites Nearby

Bedulu and Pejeng are Bali's archaeological heartland. Within a few kilometres you have Goa Gajah, the cliff reliefs of Yeh Pulu, and Pura Penataran Sasih with its giant “Moon of Pejeng” bronze drum; slightly north lie Gunung Kawi Tampaksiring and Tirta Empul. Stop at the museum first and the rest makes far more sense.

Practical Info & Visiting

  • Location: Bedulu, Blahbatuh, Gianyar — about 6 km east of Ubud. View on Google Maps
  • Transport & parking: 15–20 minutes from Ubud along the Tampaksiring road; scooter or car both work, and Grab/Gojek are easy to book. Parking is large and free.
  • Hours & cost: generally Monday to Friday, around 08.00–16.00 WITA, closed weekends and national holidays. Entry is usually free or by donation — carry small notes, up to roughly IDR 20,000.
  • Etiquette & what to bring: never touch or climb the sarcophagi and statues, ask before using a tripod or flash, and bring a hat and water because the garden is open to the sun.
  • Social media: the museum barely promotes itself — search on Instagram for recent visitor photos.

Bedulu is easiest to explore when you stay near Ubud or Gianyar, so you can head out early just as the museum opens. Browse AccessiaPass hotel vouchers for the Ubud area — staying closer means more time for the ancient sites that tour groups skip.
