On the southern slopes of Mount Batukaru, about 1.5–2 hours' drive from Ubud or Canggu, lie the Jatiluwih rice terraces—one of the widest terraced landscapes in Bali. Unlike crowded Tegallalang, Jatiluwih is more spacious, quieter, and recognised by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site for its traditional subak irrigation—a cooperative water-sharing system rooted in the Tri Hita Karana philosophy that has run for centuries. Here you see farmers genuinely at work, not merely posing as a backdrop.
Walking Trails and Bike Rental
The managers offer several marked trekking routes, from a short loop of about 1.5 km to a long circuit of 4–5 km that takes 2–3 hours. The paths cross paddy dykes, subak channels, and farmers' huts. Wear comfortable shoes as the ground can be slippery after rain.
- Short trek: family-friendly, a relaxed 45–60 minutes.
- Bicycle: several warungs in the area rent bikes for around Rp30–50k to roll along the paved road through the fields.
- Bring water and a hat; there is little shade on the open trail.
Cafes with Terrace Views
Along the main road sits a row of cafes and warungs facing the fields—such as Billy's Terrace Cafe and several local warungs—serving coffee, nasi campur, and fried noodles for around Rp25–60k. Sitting with a cup of Balinese coffee while watching the gradient of green terraces is the heart of the Jatiluwih experience.
