The moment the ferry from Ketapang docks at Gilimanuk Harbour, one ritual has been repeated by Bali travellers for decades: stopping for ayam betutu. In the Old Terminal area of Gilimanuk on Jalan Rajawali, Ayam Betutu Men Tempeh has been trading since 1978 and is known as the pioneer of Gilimanuk-style betutu.

The Betutu That Makes You Sweat

Unlike the roasted Gianyar version, the Gilimanuk style arrives as shredded chicken swimming in a thick base genep spice sauce: turmeric, aromatic ginger, galangal, chilli and shrimp paste. The heat is honest and above average, and that is exactly the appeal.

Each portion comes complete with hot rice, fried peanuts, plecing or urab vegetables, and sambal.
Two versions exist: the original saucy one and a fried version that is drier and usually a touch gentler.
Not a chilli person? Ask for the sambal on the side and order extra rice; say so when you order so they can adjust.

Prices and Portions

A single portion (quarter chicken) runs around IDR 50,000–60,000, sides included.
A whole chicken package is roughly IDR 200,000–220,000, enough for three or four people.
Drinks are about IDR 8,000–12,000. Carry cash just in case.

Tips for a Harbour Pit Stop

It sits only about 5–15 minutes from the ferry pier, with a wide car park that regularly handles tour buses.
It is busiest at lunchtime and right after a big ferry lands; come outside those windows if you are in a hurry.
Many warungs use similar names. Look for the sign reading “Men Tempeh Asli 1978” in the Old Terminal area.
Frozen packs are sold as souvenirs. Gilimanuk betutu now has many city outlets, but the original house is still here.
