Foreign retirees who want a long stay in Bali now have two elderly visa indexes from Indonesia's Directorate General of Immigration: E33E (stay permit up to 5 years, fee IDR13,000,000) and E33F (1 year, fee IDR7,000,000). Both are applied for online at evisa.imigrasi.go.id. The details below come from imigrasi.go.id and were checked in October 2026. A few figures differ between official pages, and we flag them.
Which visa do retirees use to live in Bali?
Immigration calls both a "Second Home Visa for the Elderly". E33E runs 5 years and needs no personal or corporate sponsor, because a cash immigration guarantee replaces the sponsor. E33F runs 1 year and can be extended until total stay reaches no more than 6 years. The old "retirement KITAS" that visa agents still mention is essentially this E33F.
What is the minimum age?
The official E33E page says it is for foreigners aged 55 or older. Another immigration category page still uses the phrase "elderly aged 60 or older", and some Bali agents apply 60 for E33F. If you are between 55 and 59, apply for E33E (clearly stated as 55+) or get written confirmation from an immigration office before paying.
What does E33E require?
- Passport valid for at least 6 months.
- Personal bank statements for the last 3 months showing at least USD2,000 or equivalent.
- Proof of income or pension of at least USD3,000 per month.
- A signed commitment to keep at least USD50,000 in a personal account at an Indonesian state-owned bank. It must be proven and reported to immigration within 90 days of the stay permit being granted.
- A recent colour photo and the supporting documents the e-Visa system asks for.
The USD50,000 deposit is what catches people out. The money stays yours, but it has to sit in an Indonesian state bank (BRI, BNI, Mandiri or BTN) while the permit is valid.
What about E33F?
The official E33F page lists a 1-year stay and proof of living costs: 3 months of bank statements with at least USD2,000. On sponsors, official sources disagree: the E33F page says the sponsor must have an account on evisa.imigrasi.go.id, while another immigration office page describes the elderly visa as sponsor-free. Old retirement KITAS conditions, such as health insurance and employing a local household helper, are not written on the current E33F page we read. Bali visa agents still often ask for them, so ask directly.
What are the official fees?
- E33E, 5 years: IDR13,000,000 (visa IDR500,000, visa verification IDR2,000,000, 5-year ITAS IDR7,000,000, 5-year re-entry permit IDR3,500,000).
- E33F, 1 year: IDR7,000,000 (visa IDR500,000, verification IDR2,000,000, 1-year ITAS IDR3,000,000, 1-year re-entry permit IDR1,500,000).
Fees go to the state treasury through appointed banks and are not refunded if the application is refused. Agent fees, document translation and opening the bank account are on top. While waiting for the e-Visa and the state bank account, many applicants spend a few weeks in a hotel first, and an AccessiaPass stay voucher can cover that transition.
What is the application sequence?
Create an account on evisa.imigrasi.go.id, choose index E33E or E33F, upload documents, then pay once the application is verified. If approved, the e-Visa arrives by email and you enter Indonesia on it. The 90-day clock starts when the stay permit is granted, so open a state bank account soon after arrival, deposit the USD50,000 and report the proof to immigration. In Bali, foreigners are handled by the Ngurah Rai and Denpasar immigration offices depending on where you live. State banks usually ask for your passport, e-Visa or ITAS, and an Indonesian address to open the account.
How is it different from the Second Home Visa (E33)?
The standard E33 has no age rule, but the money test is far higher: according to the immigration page, funds of at least USD130,000 or a home worth at least USD1,000,000. It also allows up to 5 years per permit, with a 10-year total cap. For retirees with savings below that, E33E is much more reachable. Remote workers who have not retired should look at the E33G digital nomad visa.
Can you work or run a business on a retirement visa?
No. It is a stay permit, not a work permit. Renting out a villa in your own name or teaching for pay without a work permit can lead to deportation. If you only want to test living here for a few months, a visa on arrival with its extension covers 60 days.
Gaps in the data
The minimum age (55 vs 60) and whether E33F needs a sponsor still differ between official pages as of October 2026. Screenshot the evisa.imigrasi.go.id page when you apply, because officers apply the rules in force on your application date.
