If Tulamben is synonymous with the USS Liberty wreck, the Drop Off — or Tulamben Wall — is the neighbour many divers call more beautiful. The site sits at the eastern end of Tulamben Bay, in Tulamben village, Kubu district, Karangasem, roughly 2.5–3 hours' drive from Denpasar. The wall was born from a Mount Agung lava flow that hardened and was later overgrown by coral, creating an underwater cliff that drops away almost vertically.
What the Wall Looks Like
From the shoreline the seabed slopes gently before turning into three coral spurs that jut out into deep water. Divers usually follow the wall with it on their right shoulder, then turn parallel to the shore for the return leg.
- Wide-angle: giant barrel sponges at 12–15 metres, black coral bushes, gorgonian fans and carpets of fire coral
- Macro: nudibranchs, longnose hawkfish, shrimp and scorpionfish tucked into the crevices
- Bigger residents: whitetip reef sharks, Napoleon wrasse, large morays and schooling trevally
Depth, Current and Certification Level
The profile is tiered, so it suits a wide range of divers: 5–18 metres is plenty for Open Water holders, while 18–30 metres is better suited to Advanced. The reef itself keeps falling past 60–70 metres, so the temptation to “just go a little deeper” is real — respect your certification limits and always dive a computer. Currents are usually mild to moderate and tend to push back into the bay, though they can pick up near the full moon. Visibility is typically 15–30 metres.
Access, Best Hours and Costs
Entry is a shore dive from a pebble beach near the small temple at the eastern end, about 300 metres from the main road. The stones are rounded rather than sharp, but slippery: wear booties, walk slowly, and consider hiring a porter to carry your tank. Dive in the morning, ideally descending before 11am, when the water is clearest and the beach is still quiet.
- Two-dive fun dive package with gear and guide: roughly IDR 550,000–1,200,000 per person, depending on the dive centre
- Beach entrance ticket around IDR 20,000 per person, plus parking
- Tank porter around IDR 50,000–100,000, often already included in the package
- Bring your certification card and logbook, and allow 18–24 hours before flying

Because the best diving starts at first light, staying a night in Tulamben, Amed or Candidasa makes far more sense than racing up from Kuta — and an AccessiaPass hotel voucher can take the sting out of the room rate.
