Muntigunung Trek, Karangasem: Price, Times and Is It Safe?

The Muntigunung trek is not a simple entry ticket: it is a full-day guided tour costing roughly Rp1.3-1.7 million per person, including transport and meals. The route drops about 700 metres from the rim of the Batur caldera to the Muntigunung hamlets in Tianyar Barat village, Kubu, Karangasem, stopping at villagers' lontar-weaving and hammock workshops.

Who runs it, and why is there a tour here?

Muntigunung was long labelled a "village of beggars". The Swiss-Indonesian foundation Future for Children (Zukunft für Kinder) built a social business here, including the trek and a production centre for cashews, rosella and palm sugar. Karangasem regency declared it a tourism village in 2016. The organisers ask guests not to hand money or gifts to villagers; buy from the production centre shop instead.

How much does it cost?

Airbnb Experiences lists Rp1,650,000 per person (checked October 2026), including pickup, breakfast, lunch and snacks. The organiser's older price list gives Rp1.3-1.7 million depending on pickup area and group size. The official site now only says "inquire for price". On-site payment is cash in rupiah; cards are not accepted.

What time does it start, and how long is it?

Pickup is at 05:00 from south Bali and 06:00 from Ubud or Amed. Breakfast is around 07:45 at a caldera lookout, walking starts at 08:30, lunch is around 13:00 and the drive back leaves at 15:00. Count on about 10 hours in total. There is also a Light option (age 6+, starting lower at Kukul) and a no-trek Production Visit from 09:00 to 11:30 with your own transport.

How do you get there?

For the trek packages, transport is arranged by the organisers. To visit the production centre on your own, Muntigunung is about 37 km from Amed and 22 km from Tulamben via the Amlapura-Singaraja coast road, then uphill on village roads. Groups are private, from 2 to 10 people.

Is it safe?

Yes for reasonably fit walkers, with caveats. The trail is steep and slippery with thick dust, one stretch follows a ridge with a drop towards Lake Batur, and there is almost no shade. Wear trainers, not sandals. It is not the same walk as the Batu Dinding ridge on the inner side of the caldera: Muntigunung descends the outer slope towards the sea.

Who should skip it?

Anyone who cannot face a 04:30 alarm and a day on the road, or who needs to pay by card. Visitors also often advise bringing wet wipes because of the dust.
