While hundreds of hikers queue on Mount Batur every morning, Gunung Seraya (around 1,175 m) at Bali’s far eastern tip is almost always empty. This dry ridge rises straight behind Amed, and from the summit the sun climbs out of the Lombok Strait with Rinjani in silhouette.
Why it is still a hidden gem
Seraya is not an active volcano and has no official ticket gate, so it never made it into the mass tour packages. The path crosses corn plots, lontar scrub and volcanic rock farmed by families of Desa Seraya — not a fenced walkway. The reward is an empty summit with Mount Agung, the Amed–Jemeluk coastline and Rinjani (Lombok) on clear mornings.
Trailhead & trail conditions
- Start: the hamlets of Desa Seraya (Seraya Barat/Tengah) or the ridge above Bunutan, about 30–45 minutes by car from Amed via Culik.
- Duration: 2–3 hours up, 1.5–2 hours down; budget around 5 hours round trip.
- Terrain: dry and rocky, waist-high scrub, almost no shade once the sun is up.
- Guide: strongly recommended — the trail splits into farm paths and there are no signposts.
Gear & best time
- Set off at 02:00–03:00 to reach the summit before 06:00.
- Bring a headlamp (not a phone torch), at least 2 litres of water, grippy shoes, a light jacket and long trousers.
- The dry season (April–October) is safest; in the rains the rock turns slick and cloud hides Agung.
- Watch for long-tailed macaques — never leave a bag open.
- Descend by around 09:00, then go straight to snorkelling in Amed while the water is still calm.
