A portion of serombotan at Warung Mek Metar in Semarapura, Klungkung, costs about Rp5-10k, and the warung opens roughly 09.00-17.00. It has been running since the 1950s and is now in the hands of the third generation, Ni Kadek Sriani. Prices and hours below were gathered from NusaBali, RRI and a September 2025 visitor video, then re-checked in September 2026.
What is serombotan?
A Klungkung mix of boiled and raw vegetables: water spinach, spinach, long beans, green beans, bean sprouts and bitter gourd, topped with fried soybeans and peanuts, then dressed with a coconut sambal (sambal nyuh) and a runny chilli sauce. Once linked to palace kitchens, it was listed as Indonesian Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2022.
Why does Mek Metar keep coming up?
The warung was started by Mek Metar, carried on by her daughter Mek Galung, and has been run by Ni Kadek Sriani since the 1980s. The founder's name stayed. Sriani told NusaBali the spice measures have not changed since the first generation and that the shrimp paste comes from Lombok, which makes it taste different from other sellers. Buyers from Denpasar, Gianyar and even Nusa Dua often take away 10-15 portions at once.
How much does it cost?
In 2022 it was Rp5k a portion, or Rp7k with the sauce packed separately. RRI's report says from Rp10k, probably with extras. Bring small cash and budget Rp5-10k a portion.
Is it spicy?
The coconut sambal is savoury and only mildly hot. For real heat, ask for sambal uyah sera limo, a mix of chilli, salt, shrimp paste and kaffir lime. Because it uses shrimp paste, the serombotan here is not vegan.
What else is on offer?
Pepes, tipat santok, fruit rujak, plecing kangkung, es campur and Balinese snacks.
Where exactly is it, and can you order online?
- Address: Jl. Untung Surapati, Semarapura Tengah, just south of SDN 1 Semarapura Tengah primary school. View on Google Maps
- Hours: about 09.00-17.00. RRI listed 11.00-15.00, so lunchtime is the safest window.
- Online: no GoFood or GrabFood listing under the Mek Metar name was found. GoFood does list a "Warung Srombotan Klungkung" in Kesiman, Denpasar, but that is a different warung. Search on Instagram for recent posts.
What are the downsides?
It is a simple warung that serves more takeaway than sit-down customers. The address has also been muddled: the RRI article names Jl. Sutomo in Denpasar, while NusaBali and the 2025 visitor video point to Jl. Untung Surapati in Klungkung. The most recent traceable coverage dates from September 2025, so ask neighbours if the warung looks shut.
What if Mek Metar is closed?
Serombotan is easy to find in Semarapura. Ni Wayan Suparmi's stall at Semarapura Market opens around 08.00-12.00 and serves nasi sela (rice mixed with sweet potato) on the side. The market is next to Kerta Gosa, so a food stop fits neatly into a morning visit there.
