In the middle of Amlapura town, Karangasem, stands a palace complex that most travellers drive straight past on their way to Tirta Gangga. Puri Agung Karangasem — locals call it Puri Gede — is the official residence of the Karangasem royal family, built in the late 19th century. Tickets are cheap, the courtyards are quiet, and the architectural detail is far more rewarding than most people expect.
A Blend of Balinese, Chinese and European
What makes this palace special is its mix of styles. Red brick gateways and classic Balinese paras stone carving sit beside Chinese-motif woodwork, while glazed windows, columns and furniture arrived with European influence during the Dutch colonial era. The result is not imitation but a genuinely local Karangasem hybrid.
Bale Maskerdam & Bale Kambang
The main building, Bale Maskerdam, takes its name from "Amsterdam" — a reminder of the kingdom's dealings with the Dutch. Inside you can still see a furnished sitting room, a royal bedroom and old family photographs. Opposite it, Bale Kambang — a pavilion that appears to float in the middle of a pond — was once used for meetings, banquets and dance rehearsals. Around it lies a small garden shaded by old trees.
Why It Still Feels Like a Hidden Gem
- Visitor numbers are low; often only a handful of people are in the whole complex.
- The entrance fee is among the cheapest in Bali for a heritage site of this calibre.
- 45–60 minutes is enough for an unhurried walk around.
- It works perfectly as the first stop on an East Bali route: Puri Agung Karangasem → Taman Ujung → Tirta Gangga, all three within a 15-minute drive of each other.
- Modest dress (shoulders and knees covered) is still appreciated, since this remains a family residence.
