Pura Taman Ayun in Mengwi is one of Bali's most beautiful temples. Built in the 17th century as the royal temple of the Mengwi kingdom, its complex is surrounded by a water moat that makes it appear to float in the middle of a garden.
History & Architecture
The name "Taman Ayun" means "beautiful garden", and it lives up to it. Visitors are welcomed by an expansive garden, lotus ponds, and rows of multi-tiered meru with black thatched roofs that rise gracefully toward the sky.
- Water moat: surrounds the main temple, giving a floating impression.
- Multi-tiered meru: the iconic Balinese towers symbolizing sacred mountains.
- UNESCO status: part of Bali's cultural landscape and the Subak system.
What to Do
Stroll slowly around the moat, capture photos of the meru from the garden corners, and enjoy the cool, peaceful atmosphere. Allow about an hour for a relaxed visit.
