Hidden on a hillside above the town of Bangli, Pura Kehen is one of Bali's most beautiful and impressive temples. As the former state temple of the Bangli kingdom, it offers a calm, reverent atmosphere far from the tourist crowds.
Eight Terraces and a Giant Banyan Tree
The main highlight of Pura Kehen is its tiered stone stairway of eight terraces climbing toward the sacred area. In the forecourt stands an ancient giant banyan tree, with a kulkul (wooden slit drum) perched in its branches, once used to summon the community.
Carvings and Antique Porcelain Plates
The temple walls are decorated with fine sandstone carvings. Uniquely, several antique Chinese porcelain plates are embedded in the walls as ornaments — traces of old trade routes. The setting is shady, leafy, and very photogenic.
