Almost everyone comes to Kintamani for one thing: the crowded Mount Batur sunrise trek. Yet across the lake, inside Desa Abang Batudinding, there is a narrow caldera ridge with a view of Lake Batur from an angle nobody photographs — and you will usually have it to yourself.
What “Batu Dinding” Actually Is
- In Bali, Batu Dinding is a village name: Desa Abang Batudinding in Kintamani, Bangli, whose western edge touches Lake Batur. Banjar Suter sits inside it.
- The ridge is this village's caldera rim, which is also the opening stretch of the Gunung Abang trail — not a separate ticketed attraction, and not the Bukit Batu Dinding in East Kalimantan.
- The key difference: reaching this ridge takes only about 45–60 minutes one way, far lighter than the 3–4 hour trek to the Gunung Abang summit (2,152 m).
Trailhead and Route
- Landmark: the Batur Geopark Museum on Jalan Raya Penelokan, Batur Selatan; from there turn towards Suter along a narrow, potholed village road.
- Vehicles stop at the trekking post near Pura Munggu; there is parking, warungs and toilets.
- Post 1 (Pura Penyawal) takes about 45–60 minutes; the stretch to Post 2 (Pura Andong) runs right along the caldera rim with the lake wide open on your left.
- Turning back at the ridge is enough: roughly 2–2.5 hours round trip.
Safety and Best Time
- The path is narrow, sandy and windy with steep drops on both sides; the continuation towards the summit has already claimed a life.
- Wear shoes with grippy soles; cancel during or right after rain, because the volcanic soil turns extremely slippery.
- Come at dawn or in the late afternoon; fog rolls in from midday until the small hours and closes off the view.
- Bring a litre of water, a light jacket, a headlamp if it is dark, and cash.
Practical Info & Booking
- Location: View on Google Maps — about 1.5 hours' drive from Ubud via Penelokan.
- Pay at the trekking post on arrival: the Gunung Abang trail ticket is around Rp24,000 per person, covering the protected forest fee and insurance. The post is open daily with no fixed closing time.
- A guide is not compulsory, but a local guide from Suter makes the trail junctions safer — arrange it at the post itself.
- This is customary village temple land: dress modestly, avoid noise or camping on temple grounds, and postpone your plan if a ceremony is under way. Social media: search on Instagram.
Because the best views appear before the sun climbs high, a night in Kintamani or Ubud makes more sense than leaving south Bali in the small hours — especially since the room rate feels lighter with an AccessiaPass hotel voucher.
