Pantai Pengeragoan, Jembrana: An Empty Black-Sand Beach on the Gilimanuk Highway

About 58 km west of Denpasar, right on the Denpasar–Gilimanuk highway, sits a black-sand beach that thousands of vehicles pass every day and almost nobody stops at: Pantai Pengeragoan in Pengeragoan village, Pekutatan district, Jembrana regency. No gate, no ticket — just a line of coconut palms, scattered boulders and the open Indian Ocean.

Why it is worth the stop

  • A wide sweep of volcanic black sand that stays nearly empty, even at weekends.
  • An unbroken western horizon — one of the best sunset stages in west Bali.
  • It feels like a coastal village, not a beach club: no paid loungers, no sound system.
  • This really is open ocean. On 12 September 2026 residents found a whale shark roughly 8 metres long stranded here, and officials secured the site.

Access and parking

From Denpasar or Canggu take the Denpasar–Gilimanuk road west. It is roughly 56–58 km, but allow 1.5–2 hours because the route is thick with trucks and intercity buses. From Gilimanuk ferry port it is about 70 km. The beach lies on the left after you pass Pekutatan, marked by warung and a signboard. Parking is informal, on the road shoulder or in a warung yard, for a voluntary fee; there is no official retribution post.

Waves, currents and safety

  • The swell is tall and rolls in long lines — beautiful to watch, dangerous to swim in.
  • There are no lifeguards. Stay ankle-deep and keep children out of the foam line.
  • The seabed is rocky in places; wear closed-toe footwear.
  • Afternoon wind is strong. Bring a light jacket and shield your camera from salt spray.

Warung and the best hours

A handful of simple roadside warung sell young coconut, coffee, instant noodles and fritters at ordinary warung prices (around Rp5,000–25,000). Do not expect restaurants or an ATM — stock up in Pekutatan. The best window is 4.30–6.30pm for sunset, or around 7am when fishermen and locals come down to the sand. Budget 45–90 minutes, then combine it with Pantai Medewi (about 15 minutes west, famous for its long left-hand longboard wave), Pura Rambut Siwi or Bunut Bolong.
