Hidden behind lush tropical gardens in the heart of Ubud, Museum Puri Lukisan (Museum of Fine Arts) is the oldest art museum in Bali. Opened in 1956, it was founded by Tjokorda Gde Agung Sukawati together with Dutch painter Rudolf Bonnet, with a mission to preserve the modern Balinese painting and carving born from the legendary Pita Maha movement.
A Remarkable Collection
Wandering between four pavilions, you trace the evolution of Balinese fine art across the decades. The collection includes:
- Classic paintings in the Ubud, Batuan, and Pita Maha styles by masters such as I Gusti Nyoman Lempad.
- Fine wood carvings rich in intricate Hindu-Balinese mythology.
- Modern works showing how foreign artists influenced local styles.
Gardens & Atmosphere
More than a gallery, Museum Puri Lukisan is a calming oasis. Its tropical garden is dotted with lotus ponds, small bridges, and cooling fountains. The mild Ubud air makes a visit feel like visual meditation. Entry is around Rp95k and already includes tea or coffee you can enjoy while relaxing in a pavilion.
