South Bali's worst traffic usually hits in the late afternoon and evening, roughly 4-8pm, when the commute home meets visitors chasing sunset and dinner. Central Ubud, by contrast, clogs up most around midday. The transport authorities have not published peak-hour data per road, so the patterns below are compiled from statements by the Badung, Gianyar and Bali provincial transport offices and reporting by detikBali, Bali Post and ANTARA, checked in September 2026.
Canggu, Berawa and Kerobokan: when is it worst?
From just before sunset through dinner time. Jl. Pantai Batu Bolong, Jl. Pantai Berawa and Jl. Raya Canggu are narrow and packed with scooters, cars and people crossing. The Canggu-Tibubeneng shortcut at the Padonan junction (335 metres) opened on 10 January 2024, but the Badung regent at the time said himself that it would not end the congestion. Kerobokan Kelod is one of the spots where Badung's transport office has already changed the traffic flow (Bali Post, 5 May 2026).
- What is changing: the Badung regent is targeting an alternative route of about 4.7 km, Canggu-Berawa-Umalas-Kedampang-Teuku Umar Barat, for completion by the end of December 2026 (ANTARA, 24 August 2026). Bali Post (3 September 2026) put its budget at Rp516 billion. Until it actually opens, do not count on it.
The Uluwatu road: why can the afternoon take 2-3 hours?
Jl. Raya Uluwatu, from Jimbaran past GWK to Pecatu, is the only main road to the Bukit cliffs. The Toyaning junction is the Badung transport office's top priority because of its traffic volume. Since 1 June 2026 a loop system has operated at six points: from Nirmala southwards, Blimbing, Blimbing Sari, Toyoning 1 and Toyoning 2. The Badung regent said the GWK-Uluwatu trip can take 2-3 hours during big events (Bali Post, 3 September 2026). The Ayana-Uluwatu Southern Ring Road, more than 10 km long, is still only a plan.
- For sunset in Uluwatu or a Bukit beach club, leave Canggu or Seminyak by 2.30-3pm at the latest.
- On the way back, leave before sunset ends or wait until about 8pm.
Ubud: midday, not evening
Jl. Raya Ubud, Jl. Monkey Forest, Jl. Hanoman and Pengosekan are busiest around midday when tour buses arrive. Gianyar's transport office is rolling out a one-way scheme in stages. Phase III on 8 September 2026 instead caused jams of more than four hours, from noon to 4.30pm according to an officer on the ground (detikBali), and no changes had been confirmed. Get into central Ubud before 10am, park once and walk.
The airport, Simpang Dewa Ruci and Jl. By Pass Ngurah Rai
The airport-Kuta-Sunset Road stretch and Jl. By Pass Ngurah Rai are busy on weekday mornings and afternoons. For Nusa Dua or Sanur, the Bali Mandara toll road is often faster than the bypass. If your flight is in the afternoon and you are leaving from Ubud or Canggu, allow extra time. How to book a pickup and typical fares are in our Ngurah Rai airport transfer guide.
Estimated driving times
These ranges are rough estimates, not official data. Always check Google Maps when you set off.
- Airport-Seminyak: 25-40 minutes when clear, 60-90 minutes at peak.
- Airport-Canggu (Berawa): 45-60 minutes when clear, up to 2 hours at peak.
- Airport-Ubud: 60-80 minutes when clear, 2-2.5 hours at peak.
- Canggu-Uluwatu: about 1 hour when clear, 2 hours or more before sunset.
- Seminyak-Canggu: 20-30 minutes when clear, about 1 hour in the late afternoon.
- Ubud-Canggu: 60-80 minutes when clear, about 2 hours in the late afternoon.
Seasons and policies that make a difference
- Long holidays: during the 2026 Eid holiday, the head of Bali's transport office named Kuta, Canggu, Seminyak, Legian, Jimbaran, Ubud, Tanah Lot and Bedugul as the busiest spots. The same pattern applies over Christmas and New Year.
- Trucks: a Bali governor's circular limits trucks over 5 tonnes to 9pm-5am; Karangasem has applied it from 8pm since December 2025 (detikBali). Other regencies are still discussing implementation.
- Rail: the Bali subway or LRT project has not been built despite a groundbreaking in September 2024. In August 2026 the provincial government announced a switch to a light rail concept. There is no rail line tourists can use yet.
The most effective ways to avoid traffic
- Stay close to the places you will visit most. Basing yourself near Uluwatu if you are there for the Bukit beaches saves far more time than shuttling from Canggu, and AccessiaPass hotel vouchers can help if you split your trip between two areas.
- Ride-hailing scooters are usually faster in Canggu and Ubud, but check the no-pickup zones in our Grab and Gojek in Bali article.
- Trans Metro Dewata and Kura-Kura buses get stuck in the same traffic because they have no dedicated lanes; details are in our Bali public transport article.
- Watch for temple ceremonies that close village roads for a while, especially around Galungan and Kuningan.
The one habit that saves the most time: schedule far-away activities for the morning and keep the late afternoon for places you can reach on foot from where you are staying.
