Gamat Bay, Nusa Penida: Clear-Water Snorkelling Without the Crystal Bay Crowds

Gamat Bay is a small rocky cove on the west coast of Nusa Penida, just minutes north of Crystal Bay. The contrast is obvious: while Crystal Bay fills with boats and umbrellas, Gamat Bay often holds only a handful of people. The water is clear, the coral garden is dense, and turtles show up in the shallows — which is why nearly every Penida snorkelling trip stops here.

What You See Underwater

  • A coral plateau around 8 metres deep, packed with hard coral, soft coral and colourful reef fish.
  • At the mouth of the bay a wall drops to a sandy bottom around 40 metres down — diver territory, not snorkeller territory.
  • Mola-mola may appear roughly July–October when cold currents rise; those conditions suit certified, experienced divers only.

Two Ways to Get There

  • Join a boat trip from Toya Pakeh or Crystal Bay: packages usually cover 3–4 spots (Manta Point, Gamat Bay, Crystal Bay, Toyapakeh) over 2–3 hours, roughly Rp 250,000–600,000 per person depending on group size and whether gear, life vest and guide are included. This is the safest option.
  • Go down on your own: follow the road toward Crystal Bay, turn onto the steep concrete road to Gamat Bay, park at the top, then descend a path and steps for about 5 minutes. The road is narrow and drops sharply — skip it if you are not confident on a scooter in Penida, and do not walk down in slippery flip-flops. Facilities are minimal: a few warungs and gear rentals up on the cliff.

Safety: The Current Is Real

  • Currents in the Penida strait can be very strong, including downcurrents that pull you under. Snorkellers have been swept out of the bay before.
  • There is no lifeguard. Never snorkel alone, and stay out of the water when no boats are in the bay.
  • Always wear a life vest and fins, and go with a licensed operator or guide.
  • Arrive early, around 07:00–10:00, when the water is calmest and clearest; check the forecast and tides before you set out.
