Galungan & Kuningan: Celebrating the Victory of Dharma in Bali

Galungan is the most important Hindu holiday in Bali, marking the victory of dharma (goodness) over adharma (evil). Celebrated every 210 days on the Pawukon calendar, it is the time when ancestral spirits descend to earth. Ten days later, Kuningan closes the cycle as the ancestors return to their realm. Because it follows the 210-day cycle, the dates shift each year — in 2026 Galungan falls around mid-June with Kuningan ten days later, so always check the current dates before you travel.

What You Will See

The most striking symbol is the penjor: an arched bamboo pole 3–5 metres tall that adorns nearly every family gate. Decorated with young coconut leaves, produce, and cloth, its curve represents sacred Mount Agung. Temples fill with worshippers in traditional dress carrying tall gebogan (towers of fruit and cakes) on their heads.

  • Rows of penjor lining village and town streets
  • Canang offerings on every corner, pavement, and shrine
  • Family processions in white and kebaya walking to ancestral temples
  • A festive yet solemn mood, akin to Christmas or a homecoming for Balinese Hindus

Etiquette & Travel Tips

This is a special time to witness Balinese culture first-hand. Respect its sacred nature: wear a sarong and sash when entering temples, never stand higher than a priest or the offerings, and ask permission before photographing processions. Note that some shops, local restaurants, and services may close or run limited hours during the holiday, and traffic near temples can be heavy.

Stay somewhere central so you can witness the festivities without battling the crowds. Secure your accommodation early with AccessiaPass hotel vouchers for a comfortable Galungan experience.
