Desa Tenganan, Karangasem

Tenganan Pegringsingan in Karangasem, East Bali, is one of the few Bali Aga villages — indigenous communities that have preserved pre-Hindu customs dating from before the Majapahit arrival. Unlike a typical Balinese village, Tenganan has a strict walled layout: rows of houses face each other along a paved street that climbs uphill, with communal pavilions and temples on its axis. The atmosphere is calm, far from mass tourism.

What Makes It Special

  • Geringsing weaving: a rare double-ikat cloth woven here and believed to hold protective power; a single piece can take years to complete.
  • Mekare-kare: an annual pandan-fight ritual (usually around June–July) in which young men 'duel' with thorny pandan leaves as an offering to the god Indra.
  • Other crafts: ata-grass weaving, lontar (palm-leaf manuscripts) and calligraphy.

Visiting Tips

The village welcomes visitors during the day; simply come and leave a voluntary donation at the entrance. Respect local custom: dress modestly and ask permission before photographing residents.

  • Duration: about 1–2 hours on foot exploring the village.
  • Entry donation: around Rp20,000–30,000 per person (voluntary).
  • Bring: cash to buy textiles directly from the weavers.
