What Plug Type Does Bali Use? Voltage and Adapters

Bali, like the rest of Indonesia, uses type C and type F sockets (the European two round pins) at 230 volts and 50 Hz. Plugs from mainland Europe, South Korea and Russia fit straight in. Coming from the UK, Australia, the US, Japan, Singapore, Malaysia or the Gulf, you need an adapter (checked September 2026).

Will my plug fit?

  • Fits directly: two-round-pin type C and F plugs, used across most of Europe, South Korea and Russia. India's thin two-pin type C plug fits too, but the large three-pin type D or M does not.
  • Needs an adapter: type G three flat pins (UK, Singapore, Malaysia, UAE, Saudi Arabia), type I angled pins (Australia, New Zealand and many devices from China), and type A/B parallel flat pins (US, Canada, Japan and some Chinese devices).

Do I need a voltage converter or just an adapter?

Read the small print on your charger. If it says INPUT 100-240V ~ 50/60Hz, a simple plug adapter is enough. Almost every modern phone, laptop, camera and electric toothbrush charger works that way.

A converter or transformer is only needed for devices rated 100-120V alone, usually hair dryers, straighteners or older shavers from the US and Japan. Plugging a 110V device into 230V can fry it in seconds. Converters for high-wattage appliances are heavy and pricey, so leaving the device at home makes more sense. Many hotels put a hair dryer in the room; ask when booking if you're staying at a homestay.

Where to buy an adapter, and for how much?

  • Hotel reception. Many hotels lend adapters. Ask before you buy.
  • AZKO (formerly ACE Hardware), electronics shops and large supermarkets in Denpasar, Kuta and the tourist areas sell universal adapters and power strips.
  • Tokopedia or Shopee can deliver to your hotel in 1-3 days. Universal adapters there start at around Rp35,000 (about US$2) as of September 2026; models with USB ports cost more.
  • Airport and souvenir shops are handy in a pinch but usually charge more.

For travellers from type G, I or A countries, the cheapest move is to buy the adapter before you fly, since an "Indonesia/Europe" travel adapter is easiest to find at home.

Do hotels have USB ports?

Newer hotels often fit USB-A or USB-C ports by the bed, but the output is frequently low, so phones charge slowly and laptops often don't charge at all. Bring your own wall charger. Older villas and homestays sometimes have only one or two sockets per room, so a small power strip (sold at minimarkets and local electrical shops) helps a lot.

How often does the power go out?

Island-wide blackouts are rare but they happen. On 2 May 2025, at around 4 pm local time, all of Bali lost power after a fault on a 150 kV transmission line in East Java cut supply through the Java-Bali undersea cables; PLN restored power to every customer by 3.30 am on 3 May. Short local outages are more common, for example in heavy rain or when trees fall on lines. Big hotels usually have generators; small homestays may not. Keep a charged power bank and your phone torch ready, and remember mobile data can drop during a wide outage too (SIM and eSIM options are in our Bali SIM card and eSIM guide).

If you only buy one adapter, get one with two USB ports. Your phone and smartwatch can then charge together from the single bedside socket that many rooms have.
