For a single 5 kg box to Australia, EMS by Pos Indonesia is usually the cheapest at about IDR 1.3-1.5 million, while DHL Express costs about IDR 2.5-3.2 million for the same weight but arrives faster. These figures come from the rate comparison table on indoshipping.co.id updated in August 2026; prices move with exchange rates and volumetric weight, so ask at the counter before you pack. Above 30 kg, a cargo company or freight forwarder starts to make more sense.
Roughly how much? (to Australia)
- EMS Pos Indonesia: 1 kg IDR 300-420k, 5 kg IDR 1.3-1.5 million, 10 kg IDR 2.1-2.5 million. About 6-10 days.
- FedEx Express: 1 kg IDR 600-695k, 5 kg IDR 2.2-2.8 million, 10 kg IDR 3.8-4.6 million. About 4-6 days.
- DHL Express: 1 kg IDR 620-750k, 5 kg IDR 2.5-3.2 million, 10 kg IDR 4.2-5 million. About 3-5 days.

Option 1: Pos Indonesia
According to the official site posindonesia.co.id, there are five international services. The ones that matter for souvenirs:
- EMS: to 47 countries, about 3-5 days according to Pos (often longer in practice because of customs at the destination), up to 30 kg, trackable.
- Paket Pos Cepat Internasional: 2-30 kg, 6-10 days, cheaper than EMS.
- Pos Tercatat Internasional (registered mail) and e-Packet: up to 2 kg, 6-10 days. Good for one or two fabrics, small silver jewellery or books.
Bring the box to the post office unsealed, because staff usually check the contents before you fill in the customs declaration. Bring your passport. The main post office in Renon, Denpasar, handles international parcels; the Kuta post office does too, but ask which services a small branch offers first.
The downsides: the counter process can take a while, tracking after the parcel leaves Indonesia depends on the destination country's postal service, and you have to carry the box to the post office yourself.
Option 2: DHL or FedEx
Faster, clean door-to-door tracking, and pickup on request. Two things often catch people out:
- Volumetric weight. Express couriers charge whichever is higher, actual weight or volumetric weight (length x width x height in cm divided by 5,000). A 50 x 40 x 40 cm box of rattan hats weighing only 3 kg is billed as 16 kg.
- Charges at the destination. If the parcel attracts import duty, the courier usually pays it upfront and bills the recipient, sometimes with a handling fee.
Express makes sense for high-value items (paintings, larger amounts of silver jewellery) or when the parcel must arrive by a certain date.
Option 3: cargo companies in Kuta and Denpasar
For furniture, many boxes or anything over 30 kg, an air or sea freight forwarder is usually cheaper per kg. Some offer hotel pickup, packing and fumigation. Before agreeing, ask for a written quote that states:
- whether the price is door-to-door or only to the destination port or airport;
- who handles customs and quarantine at the destination, and how much that costs;
- the minimum weight (some forwarders set 100 kg) and the expected transit time, since sea freight can take weeks.
Agent fees at the destination are often left out of the first quote, and that is where the total balloons.
Items that often cause trouble
- Wood, rattan, bamboo, woven goods: Australia and New Zealand are very strict on biosecurity. Ask for a fumigation certificate when shipping by cargo, and declare wood or plant material.
- Food: coffee, spices and packaged snacks must be declared in many countries; meat, eggs and dairy are usually refused. Details for Australia are in our article on Bali souvenirs seized at Australian airports.
- Coral, shells and sand: banned from leaving Indonesia, in luggage or by parcel. The rules are explained in can you take coral, shells or sand home from Bali.
- Kris daggers, knives, loose batteries, perfume, flammable liquids: post offices and couriers usually refuse them or ask for extra paperwork. Ask before you pack.
Import duty at the destination
- Australia: parcels worth AUD 1,000 or less are generally free of duty and GST at the border, except alcohol and tobacco.
- United Kingdom: gifts from one private person to another up to GBP 39 are free of duty and VAT.
- European Union: gifts between private persons up to EUR 45 are free of duty and VAT.
- United States: the duty exemption for shipments under USD 800 (de minimis) ended on 29 August 2025, so even low-value parcels can attract duty. Several postal operators worldwide suspended US shipments for a time; ask at the counter whether service to the US is currently open.
So which one should you use?
- Under 30 kg, no rush, contents are fabric, T-shirts or small crafts: EMS or Paket Pos Cepat Internasional. Cheapest.
- Valuable items, must arrive within a week, or you want pickup from your villa: DHL or FedEx, and measure the box first so volumetric weight doesn't blow up the price.
- Over 30 kg or furniture: a cargo forwarder, with a written door-to-door quote.
- Only 5-10 kg over: compare with the extra baggage price in your airline's app first. Buying extra baggage in the app before flight day is often cheaper than shipping, and the items travel home with you.
On the declaration form, describe items specifically, for example "2 cotton endek fabrics, 1 fumigated teak bowl", not "souvenirs". Vague descriptions are the most common reason parcels get held by customs at the destination.
