Café Batujimbar Sanur: The Culinary Living Room Since the 90s

Along Jl. Danau Tamblingan, cafes come and go, but one name has held its ground since the early 1990s: Café Batujimbar. Sanur residents call it "Sanur's living room" — the place people come to for breakfast, open a laptop, then drift back in the afternoon without needing a reason. It started life as an extension of an organic vegetable farm founded by Iskandar Waworuntu, and is now run by Aviadi Purnomo with kitchen standards that have barely shifted in three decades.

The mood: shaded, spacious, never rushed

The building opens onto a garden where big trees shade almost the whole terrace. Inside there is an air-conditioned room for anyone who cannot take the Sanur midday heat. What sets it apart from the cafe next door is the scale: tables are not crammed together, and conversation never echoes.

  • The outdoor terrace — canopied by trees, the favourite for long breakfasts and families with children.
  • The air-conditioned indoor room — the choice of freelancers and midday meetings.
  • Its own generous car park — a rarity on the narrow Jl. Danau Tamblingan, and cars still fit.
  • The quietest hours are roughly 14.00–17.00; late mornings and weekends are busiest.

What is worth ordering

The menu runs in two directions: Western-style breakfasts and Indonesian cooking taken seriously. Both are equally consistent.

  • Nasi campur — the signature plate, with tender beef rendang, fried tempeh and sambal; around Rp90,000–100,000.
  • Rendang and lamb satay — the two dishes long-standing regulars mention most.
  • Eggs Benedict and sourdough with avocado — around Rp85,000, the backbone of the breakfast menu.
  • Lontong sayur and rice porridge — a local breakfast for anyone wanting something warm and light.
  • Coffee and fresh juice — a cappuccino or latte is around Rp40,000, fruit juices Rp45,000–55,000.
  • Pancakes, pastries and tiramisu — pastries start at around Rp25,000–35,000.

What to know before you go

  • Menu prices exclude tax and service of about 15% — build that into your budget.
  • This is not a budget warung. Allow around Rp150,000–250,000 per person for a full meal with a drink.
  • There is a second outlet inside the Jenggala Keramik flagship store in Jimbaran, open 09.00–18.00 — handy if you are on the southern side of the island.
  • It is walkable from many hotels around Jl. Danau Tamblingan and Sanur beach.
