Since 22 February 2026, Bank Mandiri ATMs have charged IDR50,000 per withdrawal on Visa and Mastercard cards issued abroad, and Mandiri's official FAQ says the fee rises to IDR100,000 from 6 November. The other big banks in Bali (BCA, BNI, BRI, CIMB Niaga) had not published a similar access fee for foreign cards as of October 2026. Add your own card issuer's charges and one withdrawal can cost 3-8 percent if you pick the wrong machine or press the wrong button.
Before you withdraw
- Read the fee confirmation screen. Mandiri must show the Access Fee on screen before you confirm, and you can cancel at no cost. Foreign cards on the JCB and UnionPay networks are exempt from this Mandiri fee. If any bank's screen shows a fee you did not expect, cancel and move on.
- Favour BCA and BNI machines at bank branches. 2026 traveller reports still say neither adds a fee for foreign cards. That is not an official figure: we found no published BCA, BNI, BRI or CIMB Niaga fee table for foreign cards. Treat "free" as true only when the screen shows no fee.
- Decline currency conversion (DCC). If the machine offers to charge you in dollars, euros or your home currency, choose without conversion or charge in rupiah (IDR). The DCC rate is set by the ATM operator and is usually several percent worse than the card network rate.
- Check your own bank's charges. Many banks in Australia, Europe and Asia charge a flat overseas withdrawal fee plus a foreign transaction percentage. These never appear on a Bali ATM screen and only show up on your statement.
- Withdraw larger amounts less often. With a flat fee per transaction, three withdrawals of IDR1 million cost far more than one of IDR3 million. Most machines in Bali cap a single withdrawal at around IDR2.5-3 million, depending on the notes loaded and your card limit. Banks do not publish exact foreign-card limits.
- Use machines inside banks, malls or staffed minimarts. Standalone roadside ATMs in Kuta, Legian and Canggu are the spots most often linked to skimming devices. Cover your hand when typing the PIN and gently tug the card slot. If it has already happened, see card skimmed in Bali.
- Withdraw during branch hours. If the machine swallows your card you can walk straight into the branch for help. Outside hours it takes longer, see ATM swallowed your card in Bali.
Wise and Revolut: really free?
Wise and Revolut cards are popular in Bali because they use rates close to the market rate. Both give a monthly fee-free withdrawal allowance that depends on the issuing country and your plan, then charge above it. What people forget: the free allowance only removes Wise's or Revolut's own fee. Mandiri's IDR50,000 Access Fee is still deducted because the ATM owner charges it. Check your remaining allowance in the app before heading to the ATM.
How much cash do you actually need?
Hotels, restaurants in tourist areas, beach clubs and many warungs in Bali take cards or QRIS. Cash is still needed for parking, village temple and waterfall entry, small warungs and local drivers. For exchanging cash directly, licensed money changers and how to avoid trick rates are covered in our guide to changing money and paying in Bali.
One small habit that saves money: keep ATM receipts until the transaction shows on your statement. If you are charged twice, or the cash never came out but your balance dropped, the transaction number on the receipt speeds up the claim with your card issuer.
A note on the data
Mandiri's fee is the only official figure we could confirm on a bank's own website. Mandiri's FAQ gives no year for the 6 November increase, but the context follows the February 2026 launch. For other banks, the ATM screen on the day you withdraw is the most accurate source. If the screen differs from this article, trust the screen.
