In the village of Suwat, roughly 12–14 kilometres northeast of Ubud, sits a waterfall that rarely makes the standard tour itinerary: Suwat Waterfall. It stands only about 10–15 metres tall, but that is exactly its charm — a heavy, steady flow that lands straight into a wide, calm natural pool. While Tegenungan is busy with photo queues, Suwat is often shared with barely a dozen people plus village kids swimming after school.
Why Suwat Instead of Tegenungan
- The pool is wide enough to actually swim in, not just wade at the edge.
- The descent is short: about 60 steps and a 200-metre path, 5–10 minutes from the car park.
- There is a grassy garden and seating above the pool, good for a picnic or simply drying off.
- Suwat's signature bamboo raft can be rented to float out to the middle of the pool.
Best Hours and What to Bring
- 07:00–09:00 is quietest with the softest light; the water is sharply cold, so bring a towel.
- Avoid the 11:00–14:00 window on weekends if you want the pool to yourself.
- Bring a change of clothes, non-slip sandals, a dry bag, and cash — tickets are cash only and there is no ATM nearby.
Safety People Keep Ignoring
- The centre of the pool is far deeper than it looks. Never jump before checking depth and rock positions.
- In the rainy season the water turns brown and the current strengthens; cancel your swim if heavy rain falls upstream.
- The stone steps get genuinely slippery after rain.

Suwat is best when you are not chasing a schedule: swim early, dry off in the garden, then head into Gianyar town for breakfast. Because it sits exactly between Ubud and Bangli, make it your first stop of the day — and an AccessiaPass hotel voucher makes two nights near Ubud far easier on the budget than driving up from Kuta.
