Tumpek Wayang falls on Saturday, 10 October 2026, together with Kajeng Kliwon Uwudan (Balinese calendar and IDN Times Bali holy-day schedule, checked October 2026). It returns every 210 days; the previous one was 14 March 2026. For Balinese Hindus it is the day of the wayang puppets and the dalang (puppeteer), and also the day of purification for children born in the wuku (week) of Wayang.
What you will see
Puppeteers place offerings on top of their puppet chests, because the puppets are treated as living things. Many homes, banjar halls and temples stage wayang sapuh leger, a shadow puppet performance that forms the core of the purification. According to the Kala Tattwa manuscript, a child born in the week of Wayang is vulnerable to the demon god Bhatara Kala and needs to be cleansed through this ceremony.
What is changing: more mass ceremonies
A private sapuh leger is expensive and labour-heavy, so village councils and the Hindu council PHDI now often hold them collectively. On Tumpek Wayang in August 2025, PHDI Klungkung held free mass sapuh leger, tooth-filing and three-month baby ceremonies at the Balai Budaya Dewa Agung Istri Kanya, attended by hundreds of people (Kabar Bali Satu). Mass schedules for 2026 are announced village by village, usually in local media a few days ahead.
What it means for visitors
- It is not a public holiday. Shops, restaurants and attractions stay open.
- Sapuh leger is a family ceremony. Watch only if invited or if it is held openly in a banjar hall, and do not photograph a child being purified without the parents' permission.
- Because it coincides with Kajeng Kliwon, many people pray in the late afternoon; village roads are sometimes closed briefly for processions.
- On the same day the Klungkung Heritage Festival opens in Semarapura, close to Kamasan, the village of classical wayang painting.
Dress codes and where to sit when watching a ceremony are covered in our guide to watching Balinese ceremonies. If you want to see a shadow puppet show without intruding on a ritual, ask your hotel whether a temple or banjar hall nearby has an open performance that evening.
