Biorock Coral Garden, Pemuteran: Snorkelling Over an Electrified Reef Nursery

About three hours' drive from south Bali, on the northwest coast of Buleleng, Pemuteran Bay hides an unusual coral garden. Since the early 2000s the bay has been home to one of the world's largest Biorock restoration projects: dozens of steel structures carrying a very low, safe electric current that makes sea minerals accrete on their surface, helping transplanted corals grow faster and cope better with environmental stress.

A Reef Nursery Beginners Can Explore

What makes Pemuteran special is depth: the whole garden lies in shallow water, roughly 3–7 metres and only metres from the shoreline. You do not need a dive certificate to see it — mask, snorkel, and fins are enough. Among the domes, tunnels, and “coral houses” hide several underwater sculptures; the most sought-after is the Coral Goddess, a female figure now almost entirely encrusted with coral and sponge. Small reef fish swarm between the frames, and visibility is usually good on calm days.

How to Join, Costs, and Best Time

  • Gear rental: dive operators and guesthouses along the Pemuteran road rent snorkel sets for roughly Rp50,000–100,000 per day.
  • Beach entry: the Biorock structures sit close to shore, so many visitors simply swim out from the beach with a guide.
  • Boat trip: a local boat to tour snorkelling spots around the bay runs about Rp150,000–350,000 depending on duration and group size.
  • Best time: early morning, when the sea is calmest and light penetration is best, especially in the dry season (around April–October).
  • Donations: the project is community-run and depends on contributions; leave a conservation donation via your operator or the collection boxes.

Conservation Rules and Trip Pairings

The rules are simple but firm: never touch, hold, or stand on the corals and structures, keep your fins clear so you do not stir up sediment, and skip chemical sunscreen — wear a rash guard or use reef-safe products. Since you have come this far, set aside another day for Menjangan Island in West Bali National Park, about 30–45 minutes by boat, famous for its coral walls and clear water.
