Sate Babi Bawah Pohon: Bali’s Legendary Pork Satay in Legian

The name Sate Babi Bawah Pohon — literally “pork satay under the tree” — came from exactly that: the warung once sold from mats under a shady tree on Jalan Patih Jelantik, near the Gelora Trisakti field in Legian. After years as a local favourite it has moved into a semi-open building on Jalan Dewi Sri IV–Campuhan, still in Legian, about a 20-minute drive from central Denpasar. One note before you go: this is Balinese pork cooking, so the menu is non-halal.

The Satay People Come Back For

The flavour hinges on base genep, the full Balinese spice paste worked into the meat before it hits the charcoal. The cubes are cut thick, so they stay juicy rather than drying out like most roadside satay.
