Saraswati Day falls on Saturday 31 October 2026, and Banyu Pinaruh the next day, Sunday 1 November 2026 (2026 Hindu holy days per the Balinese calendar, checked September 2026). To see thousands of Balinese Hindus purify themselves in the sea at dawn, Mertasari Beach at the southern end of Sanur is one of the busiest spots in Denpasar: at the September 2025 Banyu Pinaruh, local media counted 3,000-5,000 people and seven high priests led a mass purification ceremony here.
Saturday 31 October: Saraswati Day
- 7-10 am: schools and campuses hold prayers. Students arrive in traditional dress carrying offerings. Books, lontar palm-leaf manuscripts and stationery receive offerings as symbols of knowledge; by tradition, books are not read or written in until the next day.
- Midday to afternoon: temples and family shrines are busy. Saraswati is not a national holiday, so shops, restaurants and attractions generally stay open.
- Evening: some devotees stay overnight at temples for reflection. Go to bed early if you plan to be at the beach at dawn.
Sunday 1 November: Banyu Pinaruh at Mertasari
- 4:30 am: set off. From a Sanur hotel it's 5-10 minutes; from Kuta or Seminyak allow 30-45 minutes, as roads toward Mertasari fill up before first light.
- 5-6 am: people arrive with canang offerings, pray facing the sea, then wade in and wash their hair in seawater. Sunrise is around 5:50-6:00 am.
- 6-8 am: peak crowds: families, students, village groups. The priest-led mass purification in 2025 was organised by Pinandita Sanggraha Nusantara (PSN) Bali, but it isn't held every Banyu Pinaruh; check local news closer to the day.
- 8-10 am: the mood relaxes. Kids play in the water, float rentals cost around IDR 15k, and snack vendors line the sand.
- After 10 am: the beach empties. Have breakfast in Sanur and avoid the Ngurah Rai Bypass until after midday.
Etiquette for watching
- Dress modestly. If you want to go into the water, wear a sarong or clothing that covers you, not a bikini.
- Give people praying room; don't stand between them and the sea.
- Ask before taking close-up photos, skip the flash, and don't fly a drone.
- Don't step on canang and offerings in the sand.
Before you go
This is a ceremony, not a show: no tickets, stage or seating. The beach is long, with several entrances and a big parking area, but at peak time parking still fills up and you will almost certainly get wet and sandy. It's not for anyone hoping for a quiet sunrise photo; pick another day for that. On normal days the beach is known for kitesurfing and a calm lagoon, see our Mertasari Beach review. Staying in Sanur on Saraswati night, for example with an AccessiaPass hotel voucher, cuts the dawn trip down to minutes.

- Booking: none needed, just turn up. Details of any mass purification are usually announced in local media a few days before.

After Banyu Pinaruh the cycle continues: Soma Ribek (Monday 2 November), Sabuh Mas (Tuesday 3 November), then Pagerwesi on Wednesday 4 November 2026. What happens that day is in our Pagerwesi 4 November 2026 article.
