Sangeh Monkey Forest: Sacred Nutmeg Forest & Bukit Sari Temple in Badung

If you think every monkey site in Bali is the same, Sangeh Monkey Forest will change your mind. Located in Sangeh Village, Abiansemal District, Badung Regency, about 20–30 minutes north of Ubud, this is a sacred nutmeg forest stretching beneath towering trees. Unlike the busier, more modern Ubud Monkey Forest, Sangeh offers a shady, cool, and quieter atmosphere with deep spiritual roots for locals.

The main residents are long-tailed grey macaques living in troops among the trees. They are used to people but remain wild, so caution is essential. At the heart of the forest, hidden beneath the green canopy, stands Pura Bukit Sari, an old temple that adds to the mystical aura of the area.

Main Attractions

Sangeh is more than a place to see monkeys. A few things make it special:

  • Giant nutmeg forest. The nutmeg trees here grow remarkably tall and are rarely found growing naturally in Bali, giving it an ancient feel.
  • Pura Bukit Sari. A shaded temple in the middle of the forest, surrounded by moss and old trees.
  • The Lanang Wadon tree. An iconic tree with a uniquely shaped trunk believed to hold meaning, a popular photo spot.
  • Peaceful atmosphere. Far quieter than the Ubud Monkey Forest, perfect for a relaxed stroll and fresh air.

Tips for a Safe Visit

The monkeys here are clever and often eye visitors' belongings. A few practical steps to keep your visit pleasant:

  • Keep glasses, hats, phones, and food in a securely closed bag.
  • Avoid prolonged direct eye contact and do not provoke the monkeys.
  • Use the local guides usually available at the entrance for a safer and more informative experience.
  • Arrive early for cool air and monkeys that are active but not yet too aggressive.
  • Wear comfortable footwear, as the forest paths can be damp.

Access & Best Time

From central Denpasar, the drive takes about 45–60 minutes. From Ubud it is closer, around 20–30 minutes. The roads to Sangeh are fairly smooth and accessible by car or motorbike. Since public transport is very limited, renting a vehicle or booking a transfer service is the most practical option. The best time to visit is in the morning when the weather is still cool and the area is not yet crowded.
