Maha Gangga Valley sits on Jalan Raya Tirta Gangga in Ababi village, Abang district, about 200 metres from the Tirta Gangga water palace, and it only opens at 10.00. The sensible plan is to see Tirta Gangga first and walk or drive over when the gate opens. Karangasem Tourism Office visitor data for 2026 shows the site still logging guests every month, with roughly 1,900 foreign visitors from January to August, far more than domestic ones.
What is there
About 1.5 hectares of terraced rice fields facing Mount Agung and Lempuyang, a clear spring-fed river you can soak in, a small pool by a mini waterfall, wooden bridges, and cone-shaped thatched huts used for glamping. There is a restaurant, an animal-feeding area and Balinese costume rental for photos. Think of it as a river and photo stop, not a hike.
Route from Amed (half day)
- 08.00 Leave Jemeluk or Lipah. The road via Culik to Tirta Gangga is about 15-20 km, roughly 35-45 minutes by scooter or car.
- 08.45 Visit Tirta Gangga while it is still quiet. An hour covers the pools and stepping stones.
- 10.00 Move to Maha Gangga Valley, about a 3-minute drive. Arrive at opening so the river is still empty.
- 10.15-12.30 Walk the paddy dikes, soak in the river, rest in a hut.
- 12.30 Lunch at the valley restaurant or at the warungs facing Tirta Gangga.
- 13.30 Back to Amed (about 40 minutes), or continue in the late afternoon to Lahangan Sweet for sunset.
Starting from Sidemen
It is further: via Amlapura allow about 1-1.5 hours each way. Leave at 07.30, stop at Tirta Gangga at 09.00, enter Maha Gangga at 10.00 and head back after lunch so you are not driving Sidemen's hill roads after dark.
Tickets and glamping: sources disagree
An aggregator updated in May 2026 lists IDR 15,000. Another travel guide gives IDR 25,000 for adults and IDR 15,000 for children, while detikBali reported IDR 30,000 for Indonesians, IDR 50,000 for foreigners and IDR 20,000 for holders of a Bali ID card. Several TripAdvisor reviewers say they were offered a guided tour for around IDR 200,000 when plain entry costs far less, so ask for the no-guide price at the counter. Glamping is quoted at IDR 500,000 per night for four including breakfast, while another source lists IDR 600,000-1,000,000. Prices checked October 2026; confirm before booking.
Downsides
- The restaurant is reported to be slow at busy times.
- Paths get slippery after rain; sport sandals beat flip-flops.
- There are only about 15 glamping huts and they fill up in July-August and around Nyepi.
- Some visitors feel it leans too heavily on photo spots for the price. If you have already had your fill of Sidemen's rice fields, the river is the real reason to come.
