Pura Ulun Danu Beratan: Bali's Icon on a Cool Highland Lake in Bedugul

Standing at around 1,200 metres above sea level in the Bedugul area of Tabanan, Pura Ulun Danu Beratan is one of Bali's most recognisable landscapes. Its tiered meru shrines appear to float on the surface of Lake Beratan, backed by misty mountains — so iconic it is printed on the Rp50,000 banknote. The temple was built to honour Dewi Danu, goddess of water and fertility, and is still used for ceremonies today.

The Temple and Lake

The main draw is two meru — eleven- and three-tiered shrines — standing on plots in the lake, at their most striking when water is high so they truly seem to float. Mornings before 9am offer the calmest water, light mist, and soft light for photos. The spacious grounds are laid out as a garden with green lawns, flowers, and several Buddhist stupas reflecting cultural blending.

Cool Air and Activities

Bedugul temperatures often drop to 16–20°C, so bring a light jacket — a refreshing contrast to the southern beaches. Besides strolling the gardens, you can rent a paddle boat or speedboat across the lake. Nearby are a fruit market, strawberry farms, other Ulun Danu temples, and the Bedugul Botanic Garden to round out the day.
