If Tanah Lot feels too crowded, keep driving west. Pura Luhur Srijong stands on a rocky headland jutting into the Indian Ocean in Antap village, Selemadeg district, Tabanan (customary village of Batu Lumbang). It sits only about 170 metres off the Denpasar–Gilimanuk highway, roughly 25–30 km (about 45–60 minutes) from Tanah Lot or around 45 km from Denpasar.
History & Highlights
- A 16th-century Dang Kahyangan temple, contemporary with Tanah Lot and Rambut Siwi, linked to the holy journey of Dang Hyang Dwijendra (Danghyang Nirartha).
- “Srijong” is interpreted as “sacred boat”; legend says the priest’s boat broke apart on the beach in front of the temple.
- Four areas: the main temple with a three-tiered meru, Beji Pingit with a roughly 40-metre-deep bat cave housing tens of thousands of bats, Pura Ratu Gede Kebo Iwa (with the giant “Payuk Kebo Iwa” rock), and Pura Melanting.
Etiquette & When to Visit
- Tickets: no entrance fee; leave a voluntary donation (around IDR 10–20k) in the dana punia box.
- Sarong (kamen) and sash (selendang) are required; if you forgot yours, ask the temple caretakers whether one can be borrowed.
- Visitors usually stay in the outer courtyard (jaba); don’t enter the inner sanctum without permission, and don’t enter while menstruating or in mourning.
- Crowded with worshippers on full moon (Purnama), new moon (Tilem), Galungan–Kuningan and the temple festival (piodalan) on Buda Umanis Prangbakat, every 210 days — respect processions and keep paths clear.
- The surf behind the temple is rough; don’t swim.
