Pura Dalem Jagaraga: The Bali Temple Carved with Cars and Planes

In Jagaraga Village, Sawan District — about 11 km east of Singaraja — there is a temple that makes visitors smile before it makes them stare. Pura Dalem Jagaraga carries something almost unmatched in Bali: colonial-era scenes rendered in the fluid, quietly witty North Balinese relief style.

Reliefs That Laugh at the Colonial Era

Carved into its walls and gates are a vintage car resembling a Ford Model T driven by an armed figure, an aeroplane, cyclists, a ship attacked by a sea monster, and even pirates and Europeans relaxing over beer. These carvings are a visual record kept by the people of Buleleng of the new world that arrived with Dutch ships — noted down with humour and satire rather than anger.

Traces of the Jagaraga War

The name Jagaraga is tied to Buleleng's resistance against the Dutch expeditions of 1848–1849. The village fort was the last line of defence under I Gusti Ketut Jelantik before it finally fell in 1849. The temple, also known as Pura Dalem Segara Madhu, stands right within the landscape of those events.
