Pura Agung Kentel Gumi, Klungkung: 7 Things to Know Before You Go

Pura Agung Kentel Gumi charges no ticket: you sign the guestbook, leave a donation at the entrance and walk into a compound of roughly half a hectare in Tusan village, Banjarangkan. It sits on the old Gianyar-Klungkung main road, about 43 km from Denpasar and around 6.5 km before central Semarapura. Most cars heading for Sidemen or Kerta Gosa drive straight past, even though this is one of the highest-ranking temples in Bali.

Why this temple matters

According to the Raja Purana Batur palm-leaf manuscript, as cited by budayabali.com, Kentel Gumi is one of the three Tri Guna Pura. It serves as the Pura Puseh, where people pray for the wellbeing of the world, while Pura Batur acts as the Pura Desa and Besakih as the Pura Dalem. Its founding is linked to Mpu Kuturan in the 11th century. Because it belongs to all Balinese Hindus, worshippers come from across the island, not only from Tusan. The landmark you will spot first is the Meru Tumpang Solas, an eleven-roofed shrine tower in the inner courtyard.

7 things people get wrong or miss

  • Bring your own sarong and sash. This is a community temple, not a ticketed attraction, so there may be no sarong rental like at Lempuyang or Besakih.
  • A donation, not a ticket. Visitor reviews on Wanderlog mention a guestbook and a donation at the gate, with about US$2 per person (roughly Rp30,000) as a guide. Carry small notes.
  • Check the ceremony calendar. The annual ngusaba falls on Purnama Kelima, the fifth full moon. In 2024 the peak day was 16 November, with 25 customary villages taking part (Klungkung Regency website). According to kalenderbali.org, Purnama Kelima 2026 falls on 25 October 2026. The temple is packed with worshippers that day; visitors should watch from outside the prayer areas.
  • Processions can close the road. On 7 November 2024 the Mecepuk Ida Bhatara procession from Kentel Gumi to the Catus Pata crossroads in Klungkung diverted traffic from 6am (detikBali). If you plan to continue to Sidemen or Amed that day, leave spare time.
  • Come early or late. The stone courtyards get hot at midday, and several reviews suggest quiet hours to feel the atmosphere.
  • Women who are menstruating do not enter, as at all Balinese temples. Children are welcome, but the inner courtyard is not a playground.
  • Drones and photos. Do not photograph people praying at close range, and ask the temple priest (pemangku) before flying a drone.

Who it is not for

If you want a temple with rice-field, lake or ocean views for photos, Kentel Gumi will feel plain: it stands beside a main road used by trucks and intercity buses. Its value lies in its history and scale, so read a little before you go or you will only see walls and a tall meru.

Location, cost and a route to combine

  • Location: Jl. Raya Banjarangkan No.4, Tusan, Banjarangkan, Klungkung. View on Google Maps
  • Cost: voluntary donation, no official ticket (checked September 2026).
  • Hours: no official visiting hours; come in daylight, roughly 8am-5pm.
  • Recent photos: search on Instagram
  • Half-day route: Kentel Gumi in the morning, then Tihingan village in the same district to see gamelan makers, then Kerta Gosa in Semarapura.

If you would rather spend the night in Sidemen or Candidasa than drive back south, an AccessiaPass hotel voucher in East Bali makes a handy base for exploring Karangasem the next day.

One last tip: enter through the split gate on the main-road side and walk slowly through each courtyard to the inner sanctum. The sequence of courtyards is what makes the size of this temple sink in.
