Petung Natural Water vs Lembah Arca: Which Karangasem Pool?

Entry to Petung Natural Water in Muncan village, Selat district, Karangasem costs just Rp5,000 per person, half of what Lembah Arca in Rendang charges (Rp10,000; prices checked September 2026). Both are clear spring-fed pools on the lower slopes of Mount Agung, but they feel very different.

Locals call Petung "Toya Babah", because water once gushed from a crack in the rock face like a small flood. The spring sits on the border of Muncan and Padangaji villages, about 40 minutes' drive from Amlapura town according to detikBali (December 2025). IDN Times Bali covered it again in September 2026 at the same price.

How is it different from Lembah Arca?

• Atmosphere. Lembah Arca is an irrigation channel of the Arca weir, landscaped by the customary village since 2023; its managers report around 1,500 visitors a week. Petung still feels like a village stream: clear water under giant tree ferns and far fewer people.
• Price. Petung is Rp5,000 for the natural pool area, and a visitor post from April 2026 says some other pools are free. Lembah Arca is Rp10,000, plus Rp2,000 each for motorbike parking and the toilet.
• Hours. Lembah Arca opens 07:30-18:00. Petung has no published hours; visitors say it opens daily. Go in daylight.
• Facilities. Petung has changing rooms, basic toilets and inflatable ring rental. Lembah Arca is tidier with a concrete path, although changing rooms are limited there too.
• Kids. detikBali says Petung's water is not very deep, but the rocks are slippery. Lembah Arca has a shallow pool that is easier to supervise.

Petung's downsides

Litter is a long-running problem. In 2021 Muncan's village head was already complaining about visitors dumping rubbish despite the bins, and the same plea still appears in 2026 visitor posts. The paths are slippery, so rubber sandals or water shoes help a lot. Visitors rate the toilets as poor, there is no organised car park like at Lembah Arca, and we could not confirm any official website or account run by the managers.

So which one?

Choose Petung for a quiet, cheap soak if basic facilities don't bother you. Choose Lembah Arca if you have small children, need fixed opening hours, or want to continue to Besakih Temple on the same road. The two are roughly 20-30 minutes apart by car, so you can do both in one morning and then drive on to the Telabah Lantang rice fields in Muncan.
