No. Foreign visitors entering Indonesia, including through Bali's I Gusti Ngurah Rai Airport, must hold a passport that is valid for at least 6 months from the date of arrival. Even one day short, the immigration officer can refuse you entry, and in most cases the airline will refuse you first at check-in. Checked in October 2026 against Indonesia's Directorate General of Immigration (imigrasi.go.id and evisa.imigrasi.go.id).
What is the legal basis?
There are two layers. First, Law No. 6 of 2011 on Immigration requires everyone entering Indonesia to carry a valid travel document (Article 8) and lets immigration officers refuse foreigners who do not meet the requirements (Article 13).
Second, the implementing rule. Minister of Law and Human Rights Regulation No. 22 of 2023 on Visas and Stay Permits lists the requirements for the visa on arrival (VoA): a valid national passport with at least 6 (six) months of remaining validity, plus a return or onward ticket. The FAQ on imigrasi.go.id states the 6-month rule for foreigners entering Indonesia in general, so ASEAN nationals who travel visa-free should use the same benchmark.
Does it apply to the VoA and e-VOA?
Yes, to both. The official portal evisa.imigrasi.go.id says the applicant's passport must be valid for at least 6 months on the date of entry. An approved e-VOA will not save you if the passport turns out to be short, because the officer at the arrival counter still checks the physical passport. Full requirements, the fee of about IDR 500,000 and how to extend are in our article on the Visa on Arrival & e-VOA in Bali 2026.
Counted from arrival or from departure?
The official wording says from the date of arrival. Example: you land on 10 November 2026, so your passport must be valid until at least 10 May 2027.
Some visa agents and airlines apply a stricter reading: 6 months after your departure date. The safe approach is to make sure the passport still has 6 months left on the day you leave Bali, especially if you plan to extend the VoA from 30 to 60 days.
What happens if I fly anyway?
- At your departure airport. Check-in staff verify destination entry rules through the airline's travel document system. A passport with less than 6 months almost always means denied boarding, because an airline that carries an inadmissible passenger must fly them back and can be fined. SBS Australia reported airline fines of up to USD 5,000 per passenger.
- At Ngurah Rai. If you get past check-in, you will be refused entry at the immigration counter and sent back on the next flight. This is not rare: according to ANTARA (29 December 2023), Ngurah Rai Immigration refused entry to 1,230 foreigners in 2023, and 146 of them because their passport had less than 6 months of validity.
- Cost. Prepaid flights, hotels and tours are usually lost or subject to each provider's cancellation policy. Many travel insurance policies exclude refusals caused by invalid documents; read yours.
How many blank pages do I need?
The e-Visa portal requires at least one blank page for the visa, and amendment or endorsement pages do not count. Pages carrying old stamps or expired visas are not blank either. Keep two free pages so there is room for stamps if needed.
Torn or water-damaged passport: can I still enter?
Not necessarily. Indonesia is known for being strict about passport condition. SBS Australia reported an Australian teenager held for 11 hours at Ngurah Rai and sent home over a small tear, and a British couple whose honeymoon ended at the airport because their dog had chewed the corner of a passport. The Indonesian consul in Sydney gave the general rule at the time: the passport data must be machine-readable, while the final call rests with the officer on duty.
Check before you go: a torn data page or peeling laminate, water stains that blur the photo or text, missing pages or pages coming loose from the binding. If you see any of these, replace the passport.
My passport has 5 months left. What can I do?
- Renew first, then travel. There is no dispensation at the airport. Many countries offer paid express renewal; move your flight dates if needed.
- Check transit countries too. Singapore, Malaysia or any other stopover has its own rules, which can be stricter.
- Already in Bali and the passport is running out? You may stay as long as your stay permit is valid. If the passport will expire before you leave, get a new one from your embassy or consulate, then visit an immigration office to transfer your stay permit to the new passport. The consulate and immigration office steps are similar to those in our article Lost Passport in Bali.
A 30-second check you can do now: open your passport's data page, add 6 months to your Bali arrival date, compare it with the expiry date, then count the pages that are truly blank. If either is tight, renew before you book.
