If you want to see the most honest side of Sanur, head to Pasar Sindhu just before sunset. This traditional market on Jl. Danau Tondano changes character every day: in the morning it is a produce market for residents and villa staff, then from late afternoon into the night it becomes a row of cheap food stalls packed with locals and expats.
Two Faces in One Day
Roughly between 5 AM and 11 AM the aisles are full of vegetables, spices, fruit, offerings and cooked dishes to take away — plenty of villa cooks shop here. Around 5 PM the night vendors roll in their carts and light the charcoal, and the smell of satay fills the air until about 11 PM. All these hours are estimates and can shift around religious holidays.
What to Eat
- Chicken and pork satay — grilled over charcoal, sold in small portions.
- Warung-style babi guling and nasi campur Bali for a proper meal.
- Sweet or savoury martabak and grilled corn to eat while you walk.
- Es campur, kolak and cut fruit for a fresh finish.
- Ready-made dishes to take home — handy if your villa has a kitchen.
Hours, Prices and Paying
Most portions cost around Rp10,000–35,000, so dinner for three rarely passes Rp100,000. Bring small cash notes; some vendors accept QRIS, but do not rely on it. The sweet spot is 6 PM to 7:30 PM — everything is still fresh and fully stocked, the lights are on and queues are short. Ask the price before ordering, carry your own tissues and bring a cloth bag for takeaway.
