Since the 1980s, Pasar Seni Sukawati in Gianyar has been the go-to stop for Bali souvenir hunting. After its renovation, the main block is now a tidy multi-storey building with a lift, far more comfortable than the cramped old stalls. The goods are unchanged: endek and batik textiles, beach sarongs, canvas paintings, rattan weaving, bags, wooden carvings and small trinkets for the folks back home.
Getting There
The market sits on the Denpasar–Ubud road, easy to slot into any day plan.
- From Ubud: about 20–30 minutes south via Jalan Raya Mas–Batuan.
- From Denpasar: about 40–50 minutes north, depending on Sanur–Batubulan traffic.
- Parking: available on site, roughly IDR 2,000–5,000 for bikes and cars.
Opening Hours and Best Time
The market stirs from around 6am, while most art stalls trade fully from about 8am until 5–6pm daily. Come early: vendors believe the first buyer brings luck, so your offer lands more easily, and the heat has not built up yet.
The Art of Bargaining
- Open at roughly one third to one half of the first price, then climb slowly.
- Compare prices at two or three stalls before committing.
- Fair ranges: beach sarong IDR 30,000–70,000, woven bag IDR 75,000–250,000, small painting from around IDR 100,000.
- Bargain with a smile, not a contest; never haggle if you do not intend to buy.
- Bring small cash notes and check stitching or frames before paying.
