Perancak Beach, Jembrana: Painted Fishing Boats, an Old Temple and Turtle Hatchlings

If you want the side of Bali that has not been polished into a paid photo spot, point the car west. Desa Perancak, in Jembrana District, sits at the mouth of the Perancak River, about 10 km south of Negara town. No ticket gate, no queue — just rows of brightly painted fishing boats and a sun setting behind the silhouette of East Java.

Rows of Selerek Boats at the River Mouth

Perancak's main draw is the selerek boat, a large fishing vessel painted in bold colours with ornaments typical of Jembrana, always working in pairs. Together with the smaller outrigger jukung, they form a wall of colour you will not find in south Bali.

  • The best window is roughly 4pm to 6.30pm, when the light turns warm and crews prepare to head out
  • The Perancak bridge gives a high vantage point over the estuary and the moored fleet
  • The sand is black and the southern swell is strong, so this is a beach for looking, not swimming

Pura Gede Perancak and Dang Hyang Nirartha

On the bank of the estuary stands Pura Gede Perancak, a temple linked to the sacred journey of Dang Hyang Nirartha to Bali in the 16th century. It is still active and used for Melasti ceremonies — wear a kamen sarong and ask permission before approaching the inner courtyard.

Kurma Asih and the Olive Ridley Hatchlings

Founded in 1997 in Dusun Mekar Sari, the turtle conservation group Kurma Asih still actively guards olive ridley nests (Lepidochelys olivacea). The Perancak coast is Bali's most important turtle nesting area.

  • Nesting season runs roughly April to September, so hatchling releases are most likely in that window
  • There is no official fee; voluntary donations logged in the guest book cover running costs
  • A nest adoption programme exists — ask on site, because the schedule follows the hatching
