Amed is synonymous with Jemeluk, yet about three kilometres southwest lies a far calmer little bay: Lipah Beach. The sand is black volcanic grit and the coral garden begins just a few metres from the waterline, so you can snorkel without hiring a boat. In the morning the surface is often glassy flat.
Why Lipah Feels Different
- A narrow bay of small warungs and guesthouses rather than rows of tour buses.
- Shallow reef of 2–3 metres runs from the shore, then falls to roughly 8–10 metres at a drop-off 30–40 metres out.
- Butterflyfish, surgeonfish, parrotfish, blue-spotted stingrays and the occasional morning turtle.
- Local fishermen are replanting coral; some heads have bleached, but new growth is visible near shore.
Best Hours and Where to Enter
- Arrive before 9am; after midday the wind picks up, sand stirs and visibility drops.
- Choose the eastern side of the bay (to your right facing the sea); the western side is more exposed to swell and current.
- Enter at high tide. At low tide follow the sandy channel so you never stand on sharp coral.
- The rainy season clouds the water; favour the dry season if you can.
What to Bring & Reef Etiquette
- Rent gear at the beachfront warungs, roughly Rp50,000–70,000 per set; a life jacket about Rp30,000.
- Bring rubber footwear, as the entry path is rocky and coral-strewn.
- Use reef-safe sunscreen or a rash guard; never stand on, touch or take coral.
- There is no ATM at this bay — draw cash in Amed town first.
Practical Info & Booking
- Location: View on Google Maps — about 14 km from Amlapura (30–40 minutes), 2.5–3.5 hours from Denpasar.
- Booking/Visiting: no reservation needed. Just turn up, park at a beachfront warung or use the access alleys between guesthouses, then rent gear locally or through an Amed dive shop.
- Instagram: search on Instagram
- Hours & cost: the beach is freely open with no entrance ticket; parking around Rp2,000–5,000; a warung meal around Rp45,000–65,000.
To catch the clearest water at six in the morning, staying a night around Amed makes far more sense than a day trip, and an AccessiaPass hotel voucher can soften the cost of sleeping in Karangasem.
