Amid the rapid development of Bali's popular beaches, Kedungu Beach (Pantai Kedungu) remains a relatively hidden gem. Located in Belalang Village, Kediri District, Tabanan Regency, it is only a few minutes' drive from the famed Tanah Lot Temple. Yet the atmosphere is very different: calm, spacious, and still far from the tourist bustle.
Its sand is golden-black, typical of the volcanic beaches along Bali's southwest coast. The coastline is fairly long and open, backed by rice fields and rows of coconut trees. A river estuary and a small temple by the shore add spiritual and natural character to the area.
A Haven for Beginner to Intermediate Surfers
Kedungu is known among local surfers for waves that are consistent yet not as fierce as the pro spots. This makes it an appealing choice:
- Suitable for beginner to intermediate surfers wanting to practise without big crowds.
- The best waves are usually from morning to midday before the wind shifts.
- A few warungs and surfboard rentals are available around the beach.
- For non-surfers, the beach is still pleasant for relaxing and walking along the sand.
A Calm Sunset Without the Crowds
One of Kedungu's biggest draws is the sunset. Facing west, the beach offers a dramatic orange sky over the Indian Ocean. Because it is not yet as busy as Tanah Lot or Seminyak, you can enjoy the dusk in a more intimate way. A few things to note:
- Arrive about an hour before sunset to grab the best spot.
- Bring drinking water and snacks, as facilities are still limited.
- Be careful of currents around the estuary; stay in areas safe for swimming.
- Take your trash home to keep the beach clean.
Access & Location
Kedungu Beach is easily reached from the Canggu area (about 20–30 minutes) or from Tanah Lot (about 10–15 minutes) by car. The road to the beach passes through scenic rice fields. As public transport is practically nonexistent, the best way is to rent a motorbike or car, or book a transfer service. A simple parking area is available near the shore.
