In an increasingly crowded Bali, Ngrebeg Mekotek in Munggu Village (Mengwi district, Badung) remains a ritual that belongs to the villagers — not a show staged for tourists. Every Kuningan day — once every 210 days on the Balinese Pawukon calendar — hundreds of village men take to the streets carrying 2–3.5 metre poles of pulet or dadap wood, stripped of their bark.
What Actually Happens
The poles are clashed together and stacked into towering pyramids. A young man climbs to the top holding up a symbol of victory while the crowd below roars and moves through the village. The sound of wood striking wood — tek-tek-tek — is where the name mekotek comes from.
- Age: practised since the era of the Mengwi Kingdom, around the 17th century.
- Meaning: a symbol of victory in battle and a warding-off ritual — a prayer for protection, safety and prosperity.
- Status: designated an Indonesian Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2016.
- Historical note: participants once used iron spears; wood replaced them after too many injuries.
When It Happens Next
Mekotek falls exactly on Saniscara Kliwon Kuningan. Kuningan 2026 has already passed (27 June 2026). The next dates: Saturday, 23 January 2027, then Saturday, 21 August 2027. Because the Pawukon calendar drifts against the Gregorian one, always check a Balinese calendar and confirm with the village closer to the date.
Practical Info & Reservations
- Location: Desa Munggu, Mengwi, Badung — roughly a 20–30 minute drive from Canggu. View on Google Maps
- How to attend: free and open to the public — no tickets, no reservation needed. Arrive in the morning (the procession generally rolls after prayers, roughly 09:00–14:00) and park well away from the procession route.
- Etiquette: wear a sarong and sash, dress modestly, and never block the participants' path or climb on temple structures. This is a sacred ceremony, not an attraction — ask permission before photographing up close and follow the instructions of the pecalang (village wardens).
