Goa Gajah (Goa Gajah Temple / Elephant Cave) Ubud

Goa Gajah, also known as Goa Gajah Temple or the Elephant Cave, is one of Bali's most iconic archaeological sites. Located in Bedulu Village, about 6 km from central Ubud, it is believed to date back to the 9th century and blends Hindu and Buddhist elements. Its main draw is the cave mouth carved with a menacing giant face, thought to guard the entrance to a meditation chamber inside.

What You Can See

After descending a flight of steps, visitors are greeted by an ancient bathing pool only rediscovered in the 1950s, complete with seven nymph statues pouring water. Inside the dim cave are lingga-yoni stones and a statue of Ganesha. The surrounding area is full of shady gardens, large trees, and trails leading to temple ruins and a small river in the valley.

Visiting Tips

• Come early (around 8:00–10:00 AM) to avoid the heat and tour-group crowds.
• You must wear a sarong and sash; they are provided free at the entrance.
• Entry is around Rp50,000 for adults, cheaper for children.
• Wear comfortable footwear, as there are many steps and a downhill path to the valley.
• Allow about 1–1.5 hours to explore the whole complex at a relaxed pace.

Access and Location

Goa Gajah is easily reached by motorbike, rental car, or ride-hailing taxi from central Ubud (about a 15-minute drive). Parking is available across from the entrance, lined with souvenir and drink stalls. The site is often combined into one tour route with Tegenungan or Tirta Empul Temple.
